Bit late to this one but you can use painted mdf and add a sheet of toughened glass on top, add some clear rubber feet to the underside if you want a bit of vibration insulation. You can always paint the back of the glass.

What would be the best way to get a specific coloured top for a desk? I could paint something but not sure how hard wearing that would be (and how good it would look). Can you get custom coloured MFC (without spending loads) or wrap or something?
