Yikes. Been there (probably hippy too judging from above).
Next time remember to do a turn CCW to set it flush before screwing it in

I've definitely started one piss but I've never ruined a lockring from doing so. It's usually easy to tell that it's not going on easy and/or straight. Yeah, I always do a little backspin before tightening them up.
