Getting in front should allow you to stay there with two expert drivers in the fastest cars as the dirty air means the chasing car just grinds their tyres and slows due to degradation then has to pit earlier, or backs off in to clean air giving the leader free reign.
AFAIK this is fairly specific to Silverstone.
The plan was get in front at all costs before Max settles in to a rhythm and Hamilton wrecks his tyres chasing.
