Which of course is not to say that passing Max wasn't a requirement for winning the race, I just didn't see how he was going to stay ahead of a faster car for the entire race, unless (as I mentioned) the speed differential between the two cars would be insufficient for Max to get past on the track or during pit-stops.
It's quite possible he wouldn't have been able to stay ahead if he'd overtaken cleanly at Copse. But being ahead and trying to keep Max behind is better than being behind him in the first place. And it's not like he had a lot to lose.
The question that strikes me is what was the plan? Clearly it was to get past Max in the first lap before he could do what he did in the sprint race and pull clear. Was Lewis banking on Max then being unable to pass due to the high speed nature/low downforce requirement of the track making DRS less effective than at other circuits?
Just struck me as a bit underpants gnomes - 1. Pass Max 2.? 3. Win race
