Thanks. I’ve used picks and a knife, and my smallest triangular file, but I can’t get the damn thing to seat properly. My FIL stepped on (destroyed…) my glasses doing gardening work over the weekend, so I’m struggling haha.

Probably a last resort and definitely not the best solution, but you could also just get rid of the threads that are causing issues if you have to.

Success!!! Got rid of half a thread and removed this blasted thing that wasn’t letting the tool seat properly, somehow. Now just need to reassemble the hub…. Thanks for your help folks, much appreciated!

Not done. I’ve been out of the game for a few months and am losing my edge: why would the hub wobble on the drive side if I hold the wheel by it’s axle and spin it, but the rim spins round and true?

I replaced the axle so I don’t think it’s that. If it were I would expect the rim to wobble as well.
The bearings are all in place. The cones and nuts are nicely tightened.
If the wheel was assembled wrong, wouldn’t the hub spin true around the axle, and the rim would wobble?

Is it possible that it's so bad the cones aren't properly round?

What does this mean? Which bit of the hub wobbles?

Securing the axle and spinning the wheel, the centre cylinder and outer diameter of the hub on the drive side move in an orbital manner. It doesn’t spin centred around the centre point of the axle. The spokes are tight, the rim is true, the axle is straight.
Seems I’ve buggered the MIL’s new rear wheel… put the freewheel on at an angle and messed up the first two hub threads. Anyone that can help please? Cash is tight but I’m against the ropes here…
