  • Plus the slowing->stopping time and the acceleration time and then there's the rage... and that's if it happens only once.

  • Hard to know even if you only drop it once it may take about 30s if it happens early could lose 60-90s if your 10 hours deep and your fingers and thumbs stop cooperating. Just ordered Dan Bighams book so got to be many stones left unturned for me i reckon.

  • Oh yeah, that's another one on the list. I think I'd be better off spending some more on testing - small position changes are likely to have bigger impact than chainguide removal but it's getting a bit late in the game for this and I didn't really want to spend much more money on the TT setup.

  • i wouldn't trust a NW on its own to be enough security

    I’m surprised.

I’ve raced very fast, rocky XC with a NW ring and a non-clutch mech and never lost the chain.

(caveat that Deore mech probably has a stronger spring than most road mechs)

  • Deore mech probably has a stronger spring than most road mechs

It's certainly a lot stronger than CeramicSpeed springs. There's probably a some chainstay length at play here too - longer stays = less angle and I guess you're probably not in the smaller cogs so much when heading downhill? I'm a shit mtber so I'm rarely adding speed downhill by pedaling. I find generally have feet planted and use gravity is enough. It's when you're changing gears that you're more likely to throw the chain.

  • 54t Pyramid NW, D2Z 58t NW.
    Non clutch rear mech.
    Aerocoach chain guide.
    Shit London roads.
    Shit Essex roads.
    No drops so far.

In 2017 I ran Rotor Q rings, dropped a chain at more than one event despite running a front mech. Will never run ovals again.

  • Glenn Longland's RRA record for Lands End to London was broken yesterday.
Pete Dyson did it in 11:49:42 (provisionally), breaking the record by 12 minutes.
Distance was 291 miles, average speed 24.6 mph

  • He is fast, I met him on a train on the way back from a 25 mile TT. He was on a road bike and still easily beat my time.

  • @hippy While riding a normal ring I shipped my chain loads, multiple times when using an Aerocoach chain guide. I got one of these and have not dropped a chain since. It's not actually oval like that link, just round. Although I haven't ridden the TT bike in a while! Did a 12hr on the bumpy course near Alton with no issues.

  • Most people are saying NW has resulted in fewer drops so it does seem to be effective anecdotally. If I run one and ditch the FD then I have a nice excuse to quit when I drop the chain for the 3rd time...

I've bought a NW ring off TTF guy.

  • I've a 58t Aerocoach Arc that's unlikely to be turned in anger again - PM me if anyone is interested?

  • Not TTing any more or just no shorter events?

I'm going to try this to see if I can use it for Breckland 12hr without chain drops (ahahahahahaha)

  • Yes, a proper TT bike needs blutak and electrical tape.

  • I only ever used it on my Brompton for the WC lol

  • Haha that would look so rad. My missus almost bought me a Brompton for my birthday but she got me the KICKR instead which I have to say, given lockdown, has been used a shitload more than a Brompton would. One day I'll add one to my collection though. I used my 58T to do a 49 and then sold it. :) Then again I raced last year's 12hr with a 57T so it's not like big gears are just for short events or slow cadence riders.

  • I think I've done a 10 on it at some point, so I can post it here

  • Tanwall Kojaks. Not seen those before. I do like the all blacks for 26" MTB commuting.

  • Anything peripheral to my TT bike is ostensibly attached via electrical tape. Try not to think about it over rough surface at 50km/h

  • In case anyone here is interested in this kind of thing:

24h record attempt by Christoph Strasser in Austria

    Currently at 18:51:29, 826.29km (513.4mi) done, avg speed 43.82km/h (27.2mph)

  • Looks like he's going to do > 1000k

  • Yeah, he's now just 22km off with almost 80min to go... though his lap times have definitely gone up, possibly also due to rain they've apparently been having.

  • Yeah, looks like it's an "easy" 1000k.

    Fucking 'ell!

  • He's definitely dying now, but even so still doing his rounds at ~37km/h... in awful weather too. What a machine.

  • This weekend there's still just time to enter the Hounslow and District 100.
It's on the usual Farnham - Alton course, Sunday, 1st August. It is a BBAR event.

  • I think I've done a 10 on it at some point, so I can post it here

How did your time on the Brompton compare with what you would have expected to do on a 'normal' TT bike?

A friend of mine acquired some of the special 17" rims which Moultons used for racing. He built a TT bike around them, I think with the belief he would be at least as fast as on his usual TT bike.

Alas, it was not to be. After several attemps he concluded the small wheel machine was at least two minutes slower over 25 miles.
