This is my thinking, and why I get my suspension serviced every year in the hope and expectation that it won't blow up. I do, with that said, have a spare rear shock - maybe that should make it into the spare parts box next time I travel.
I have been wondering about trying the Cane Creek Helm v2 Coil, which has the advantage that whilst you can blow the damper up you have to be seriously unlucky to FUBAR the actual coil, so you can always finish the ride (albeit bouncily) whereas an air-spring failure is going to be more of a pain.
Yeah, pay someone to do that bit.
