Which brings me to my point - if VAR can decide it's not a red, why can't they decide it's worse than a yellow?
They can, but it's got to be a clear and obvious error. I guess that one wasn't clear enough to over-rule the ref.

Why is the collar pull on Shaka not a red. It is clear dangerous play, it is equivalent to garrotting someone. In rugby that is a straight red and a multiple game ban I’m sure. Where is the difference?

Im going from memory here but shirt pulling is only a yellow card offence and only if you are "stopping a promising attack". Those are the FIFA rules IIRC, not sure if UEFA is different.

But we’ll change goal kick rules to make the game more exciting 🙄

Everyone wants to see England get beaten apart from the English.
Dour jock here. This is the first time I’ve been genuinely happy to support England (once Scotland exited, naturally). This team has set an excellent example of inclusive English identity to my (English) kids. What’s not to like? I’m sorry they didn’t win, they deserved to.

Quick look at the FA rules say that shirt pulling is only a cardable offence if denying a clear goal scoring opportunity. Probably the same for UEFA?

Time for skinsuits in football

Thanks.although I'm not sure England deserved to win.
I agree this team has set an wonderful example and I'm proud of this team and what they have achieved so far. It's more a statement of how most other football fans of other countries see England generally. -

Camaroon sort of did that already Fifa didn't like it.

It could be classed as serious foul play for a red card.
-
• #158515
I still think that's all happened, I'm not saying this because I'm on the side of Italy, but just because is what I really think. And if we talking about dangerous playing still is Grealisk the one who dives down on Jorginho.

Can you back this up using the rules of the game? I appreciate that its quite open to interpretation but I would have thought it would be quite hard to justify a shirt pull near the half way line as either denying a clear goal scoring opportunity or as serious foul play.
-
• #158517
Exactly. Minor shirt pulling is, has always been and always will be part of the game.
That was an exaggerated example that was worthy of a yellow.
If he'd done it when the player was through one-on-one with the keeper then you could easily argue for a red, but not for way out on the wing not far over the half way line.
Trying to get rid of all of the dark arts out of football would take large amounts of the fun out of both playing and watching it.

plus also anyway bukayo saka should not have been on the field due to having been arrested and thrown in jail for being english. as is consistent with the 'these days' rule #notanglophobic #justdontlikethem #simpleas

Sorry totally disagree there is no skill in grabbing someone’s shirt. The only intention is to cheat.

We shouldn't be jailing people simply for being English - or maybe just a few of their better players so we don't suffer the dread of them maybe winning. Also remember, Saka stopped being English as soon as he missed the pen.

Where is the difference?
Years of nebulous rule changes and ambiguity leading to all decisions being based on what was given last week.

I agree with you here you don't want a completely sanitised game part of the why football is such a great game is that its a contact sport. Shithouseery is 100 part of it.

I wouldn't go as far as cheating. There's no skill to pulling someone's shirt, it might not be in the spirit of the game but it is part of the game. Defenders like Chiellini know exactly what they can and can't get away with; he 100% knew he was going to get a yellow and only a yellow for that and did it anyway, because it was the only way to stop Saka there and then. But he also knows that's it for the game, he can't do another blatant one like that or he's off. If England could have successfully goaded him into another yellow card offense and got him sent off would that also be considered cheating? No, it's football. For better or worse it happens week in and week out.
Is that the case in the EPL? I swear I've seen examples this season of VAR intervening in a yellow card decision to increase the severity...
Or maybe I'm just remembering the times they've undone a red.
Which brings me to my point - if VAR can decide it's not a red, why can't they decide it's worse than a yellow?
