  • Got one of those in the pack so cool. Think it is simpler than I would think. Cheers.

  • Is 9mm too much stem to have not clamping steerer?
    Stem stack height is 40mm
Stem is either alu or steel (haven't chosen yet) and steerer is alu

  • Is 9mm too much stem to have not clamping steerer?

    Yes

  • Okay! Thanks.

Related: can anyone recommend a silver threadless 1" headset with a stack height total of around 24mm?

  • Is there a financial thread (credit card/bank account etc)?

  • Found a golddust campagnolo record at Brixton cycles, at 24.5mm stack. I've already snapped half my front teeth anyway.

  • Anyone know anything about solid state relays? What's the fundamental difference between an AC and DC SSR? I think I know a DC SSR is a straight MOSFET switch inside. What's different about an AC SSR? And if you try and use DC in an AC SSR, why does it latch on and then not switch off?

  • What's the fundamental difference between an AC and DC SSR?

The wikipedia page is decent for this

And if you try and use DC in an AC SSR, why does it latch on and then not switch off?

I'd imagine it's latching due to zero crossing logic - your dc voltage isn't going to cross zero even if you go from +V to 0V, and some AC relays will only switch at the zero cross point.

  • You could try applying a negative voltage across the input after it latches to test this

  • The wikipedia page is decent for this

Didn't even think to look for a Wikipedia page! Good shout.

Yes, makes total sense now. No zero cross with DC so no switching happens, but now makes sense why if I manually turn the voltage down to zero it switches off and stays off.

  • Got the parents visiting. Anyone know somewhere near Leicester Square/Trafalgar Square that does decent steak and also decent vegetarian food?

  • I’d generally avoid any restaurant in that area tbh, they’re mostly tourist traps and generally dreadful and overpriced to shit. You’d be better off heading out of that area and aiming for north/west

  • Not sure which is funnier, the idea of a good steakhouse with good veggie options or the idea of anything good being anywhere near the appalling grockle trap of the Leicester Sq/Trafalgar Sq nexus. I'd throw the carnivore under the bus and go to Mildreds 🙂

  • ^

Wandering into Soho will have better results. But yeah, go veggie ;)

  • This is all true but we have tickets for St Martin-in-the-fields and my dad can't walk very far or fast right now :(

  • my dad can't walk very far or fast right now

    Get a taxi?

  • That'll probably be the answer. Was hoping to do the transport faff before eating rather than after. Dad is helpfully suggesting restaurants he remembers from the 90s...

  • we have tickets for St Martin-in-the-fields

Trying to do "event dinner" before a concert is probably trying to do too much. Avoid that temptation, even though you might not have seen the folks for ages and only have a short time together. The zero-stress option is going to be the St Martin's Courtyard for a light pre-concert meal, and leave the slap-up feast for another time when you have all evening and all of London to choose from.

  • What’s the veggie place in the road off Regents Street where you choose things off a buffet and weigh your plate at the end? Next to the ice bar. That was fun and the food was good (but spendy). (Second set of brackets; I appreciate both of those may have disappeared 10 years ago)

Steak and veggie in the same place is going to be tricky. Don’t laugh, but a Harvester will deliver that. Don’t think there’s one in town though.

tibits, but it seems to have fallen victim to the pandemic, sadly:

  • You could also have a look on Happy Cow to see if anything appeals to you--there are plenty of 'veg options' listings:

    https://www.happycow.net/searchmap/?s=3&location=london&metric=mi&limit=81&order=default&lat=51.5074&lng=-0.127758&zoom=11&page=1

This also lists things like Pret, so a little more work needed in weeding these out. Still, taxi may be the way to go.

  • This sounds very sensible.

Well, if somebody is desperate enough to ask in this thread, then the answer to "How do I do X" is probably "Don't do X" 🙂

  • Sometimes writing it down is enough to recognize a bad idea, sometimes it additionally needs to be bounced off others to be made plain.
