Did it run just fine before the upgrade to Big Sur?
Not that you could go back to Catalina (I suppose there's only the option to revert back to the version it came with - Mountain Lion I guess).

Does it run fine if you don't use Chrome (but some other browser)?

Currently trying safari - but all passwords are in chrome, so have to start that up to get access which then causes a crash

did a dirty "reinstall from internet" of big sur which appears to have solved the problem, so far at least...

Because you said opening Chrome makes your computer freeze up completely.

Chrome is known for it's poor performance. It uses up far more memory and cpu than most other browsers, so if you usually browse with several tabs going and on heavy sites, ie newspapers, it's quite likely that your computer grinds to a hault due to Chrome being poorly built

On an Apple Thunderbold 2 display from around 2015ish, anyone know if the thundebolt port works for video input and specifically if it'll work for displayport or hdmi to thunderbolt input. I mean not using the inbuilt thunderbolt 2 cable that comes out the back because I'm looking for a way of not buying a 50 quid adapter

Morning all. My daughter wants to update her current iPad (7 yrs old) to a newer one. She plans to use it for school work and likely youthful things on line too. Her plan is to buy the following -
iPad Air 64GB WiFi
Apple Pencil - 2nd gen
Keyboard - 4th gen
The total cost seem to be £977. Luckily, she will part find the purchase! It does seem rather expensive to me but maybe that’s just what has to be paid.
Is there anything else she should be looking at?

I know someone posted about the pencil recently and cheaper non-Apple ones are available on eBay.

There's only one proper third-party active stylus which is the Logitech Crayon. The rest are just elaborate touch screen wands. Depends whether you really want to draw with it.

It's worth keeping an eye on the refurb store as those products are usually indistinguishable from new. Currently thin pickings though:

I’m not sure she gets that. She is at secondary school. It that discount for university students only?

Does she definitely need an iPad? The new M1 MacBook Air are pretty awesome and will be lighter / more capable and cost less.

I’m not sure as I’ve no idea about these things. Cost is my department! 😁

I will need to check and find out why an iPad is what she wants and not a laptop. You have made a good suggestion but there is no accounting for the notions of a teenager!

I am pretty sure FE students get discounts too, but you will have to call them for it (I think).

agreed, especially if she wants to use the iPad keyboard, it'd be effectively a laptop. The pencil has its uses for drawing etc, but mine has been sitting at the bottom of a drawer for nearly 2 years now... @TGR

Quick update - she wants an iPad as she has a laptop. She also said that the student discount may not be available but it would need confirmed with Apple.

I echo what the others say. Tbh I wonder if an ipad is a good choice for school work? I'm not clued up enough to say for sure but gut feel says laptop

my ipad is pretty useful for watching videos, but honestly, it stops there.

I love my MBA, it's much much much much much better than what I expected...

Also, I can't remember if Apple Back To School offers offer anything for iPad purchases, but it usually starts early Aug, worth waiting to see what happens. You won't get more discounts, but in the past, Apple has offered headphones, iPods and vouchers as gifts when students buy during that period.

Thanks for all the advice. I will speak to her again and see if the laptop could be an option. I totally get what everyone is saying. I don’t really get the attraction of the iPad in comparison with the laptop.
