• Wise.

I was trying to set good standards to start! Mayve thats my mistake

  • Cute!

    Name and style?

  • 3 weeks on from the attack on our border terrier (p. 118) and I'm happy to report she's making a remarkable recovery. Wound is healing nicely and in general she's back to her old self although she is (understandably) much more barky at perceived danger (people shouting in the street and sometimes random passers-by when out walking). We're just monitoring this at the moment- mainly because behaviouralists are about £500 for a couple of sessions.

The police haven't been great. Its taken many people emailing (and an official complaint) to get them to link this attack with two other attacks involving the same dog and owner (both of whichhad been reported when theyhappened). The last I heard from the police was that the offending dog was with the dog unit awaiting their decision - that was almost 2 weeks ago...

  • Pheobe and lurcher.

  • Fabulous hound, love the white toes

  • So glad to hear she's making a good recovery.

When Otto had ~40 internal and external sutures complete with chest drain we were amazed at how well he healed up. Barely a scar now. As you hint, its the non physical side of things that is the longer term worry. Sounds like you're doing the right things. Hope it continues to go well.

  • Love these two, how old now?

  • They're going to end up in your bed anyway, don't waste time fighting it.

The longer you leave it the better chance you have of persuading them to sleep elsewhere in the future.

Give in too early and sleeping in your bed will be the only thing they expect.

  • @skinny gotta agree with grams.
From my limited experience, if they getting used to sleeping on the bed it can then be difficult for them to settle elsewhere. Whenever Lochan (our Border - see upthread) has been allowed on the bed - because she's been unwell or whatever - it's usually taken a few disturbed nights before she gets used to being back in her basket. Same is true with young kids!

Not gonna work for everyone but we went: create in bedroom 》 landing 》Hall 》 kitchen 》 kitchen without crate at about 8 months. The kitchen then provided unsuitable as she'd go ape shit when saw a cat/fox/snail walk along the garden wall. So she now sleeps in her basket in our son's room. Probably helps that's she's small enough for me to carry her up from her basket in the kitchen when I go up to bed.

@Stonehedge - thanks. To be honest I think Mrs Nonowt is finding it hardest. She's really anxious taking Lochan out especially and doesn't like walking her alone. Hopefully time will work its magic...

  • To be honest I think Mrs Nonowt is finding it hardest

It was the same for us the first time Otto was badly bitten. Jana was on edge for a couple of months and then relaxed. It sadly happened again much worse but the experience of the first time meant we were much better equipped emotionally to deal with it.

Despite two very nasty wounds (neither from aggressive attacking dogs, more bad luck with fragile whippet skin than anything), Otto had no long lasting behavioural issues and I'd hope it'd be the same for you guys in time.

  • Speaking of Otto, here he is in his usual place on the sofa in my office while I'm working <3

  • They’re both 8.5.

  • Glad she's ok and healing well! No surprise that the police are being useless really.

  • With Odie, we have his crate in the kitchen from the start. I actually camped out in there for a week when we first got him, gradually moving my inflatable bed further and further away till I was out the kitchen, at the bottom of the stairs. It was a faff, but it seemed to do the trick and he’s been fine there since.

I guess the principle is consistency - start off doing things as close to how you want them to eventually be as possible.

  • yes this is similar to the advice i've read and what I actually did last night. So much mixed advice though! Thanks for that

  • We did the same but we moved our pup’s crate out of our room and further down the landing.

She still sleeps in a crate (at 2 years old) otherwise she’s scratching at the bedroom door for attention as soon as it gets light.

  • We did something similar, where we had the crate in our room at night for the first few months until she could hold her bladder overnight, since then we moved the crate into the living room next door and then the kitchen, and then after a year and her starting to cry in the crate first thing in the morning, we decided she was getting too big for the crate and started letting her sleep in the kitchen/office on her own where she has a choice of 2 beds.

She's been fine like that for 6 months and in the event i go in there at 6am to get ready to take her for a walk, shes regularly still asleep or if she's awake she's gone and found a bone or something to occupy herself

  • Tried the crate with Scotty, initially downstairs with one of us nearby, then when that wasn't working, upstairs at night, which he also hated, just never liked being in a cage. I'm sure the long trip in a small one from Romania didn't help, dunno if there were more in his life before that. He now sleeps in our room but not in our bed, has his own on the floor, sometimes he'll be on my side of the bed when I come to sleep but promptly fucks off and stays off when I prod him, quite nice in winter, especially if he's not drifted too close to the pillow.

  • That's quite a good result though!

The dog we previously looked after quite a lot before we got our own was allowed to sleep on the bed at "home" but he was a huge pain at ours trying to do the same.

We ended up getting terrible sleep for a couple of nights but we got him to sleep in his own bed in the same room as us eventually. He would occasionally sneak onto the bed at 5am still though

  • So i tried him in the living room crate open, but I can't shut him in as open plan. But closed bedroom door, he whimperd for a little then okay for 5 min then barked for 20min solid, we have neighbours. So when he then stopped for a little I opened bedroom door he came in lay down at the end of the bed on the floor and fell asleep. I woken up at near 8 and he was asleep on my side on the floor. Took him outside and went for a wee.

Tbh if this is the solution for peaceful night for all, I'm fine with that. He holds his bladder and can wander around the flat. And sleeps quietly on the floor. Just doesn't want to be alone. He's got a bed in his crate, but its hot here so he likes the floor.

In the end I got a dog because I love them and the company.

As you say snotty, he doesn't like the crate, I event got ij with him for 15min and used treats. If he will like it eventually, it's going to take time. He's used to living with his family on the farm so I think being shut up alone isn't normal.

  • Crate training involves a few months of effort teaching the puppy to love their crate. Starting off with letting them go in to find super high value treats without closing the door for example. When you do close the door it's only for s few seconds at first...building up to a few minutes over a week or two. I think it took about six months before we were happy to crate otto for an hour during the day. If you do it right, the puppy never gets to dislike being in there as it's all at their own pace. It's something they learn to love rather than dislike less.
