Yeah, it sat long enough to get a stacked photo, first time I've tried. Seems to give it a psychedelic look

Found these (and a load more) gloworms in a bank at the side of the road whilst running at the weekend. Cool little lanterns!

Looking at it more - I think you’re right. Pretty massive for a hover fly.

@stevo_com and @Ordinata are right, it's a hoverfly. I thinks it's Volucella inanis, a large wasp mimic. The larvae feed on wasp grubs and so it's not uncommon in buildings where there may be wasps nests "often being seen on windows" Ball & Morris, 2015, Britain's Hoverflies.

It's a Scorpion Fly, https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/invertebrates/other-insects/scorpion-fly. The one in your photo is a female. The males have what looks like a scorpion's tail - hence their name.

Really good photo. I've seen a number of good focus stacked images of dragonflies though not tried it myself -hence most of my photos have the wings or parts of the body out of focus even when the head is in focus. What software did you use?

Gloworms rather than fireflies, pardon pedantry.

I use Helicon Focus at work for microscopy work:

That one is about 10 jpg's focus-stacked using Affinity Photo. I didn't do anything else to that one, if you look closely at the leaves you can see where the images overlap as the software tries to work out what's in the foreground. That can all be sorted with a bit of time. I think I picked an ambitious starting point with that pic, with lots of depth. Pleased with it though.

You are correct, of course. I blame missing a night and a half of sleep and running 100 miles. Post edited.
