  • For the time being but i do have a tendency to gravitate towards tacky looking shit it seems so I really need to try to resist these urges. Or develop some taste

  • Then there’s the choice of sporting ambassadors and the fact that Mille insists they wear their watches when they’re in action – be it on the running track, tennis court or in a Formula One car hurtling around at 360kph.

    Meh

Richard Mille himself, a man who admits he could no more put together a watch from scratch as perform open heart surgery on a dolphin.

  • Apparently so! They need to justify the cost somehow.

@Retro_bastard the watch world is full of them, so I guess you’re lucky.

  • Any recommendations of a tool to remove/fit bracelet?

Fitting BB58 bracelet is really painfully hard.

  • Split the bracelet at the clasp first. Makes it much easier. Then use a very fine springbar tool.

  • I just tape the lugs and put the spring bar 1 side at the time, 2 min job. Just make sure you hold the bracelet so it doesn’t come out the other side (on top).

  • And RM looks a bit like a vending machine/happy meal kind of watch.

Have you ever tried one on? I totally agree they look cheap in photos but holy shit, the quality on the wrist is incredible.

Or perhaps not incredible because it's exactly what you would demand for a watch of that price.

  • I doubt anyone is calling into question the craftsmanship of a RM, but the aesthetic and "yacht club" nature seems to appeal to few.

    It's a bit nouveau riche.
(Glenn Tamplin, former owner of Billericay Town, often wore one)

  • I’m curious about the Chinese fakes, in photos at least they look close and the price differential is even more silly than for Rolex.

  • omega forums...

It’s where I bought mine three years ago but there seems to be a lull in Speedmasters coming to market on there in the last six months. Prices are still climbing sharply for 70s-90s tritium Speedies so maybe people are just holding what they have for fear of being priced out of the next watch.

  • I suspect you may be right. It's the same with vintage Seamaster 300s...

  • Blue 44m Apple Watch 6 for £299 (instead of £409) if you're quick....

  • Omega Speedmaster 1978 model year

If the year of production is really important (birth year watch?) then buying from a someone whose watch already has the ‘Extract From The Omega Archives’ is the only real proof. There are websites which will give you a rough year based on the serial number but it’s not conclusive.
Depending on how deep you want to get in the hunt I would recommend buying the book ‘Moonwatch Only’ and swatting up on your model of choice, in this case a 145 0022 -78 so you can recognise dial and bezel variations. And as with all vintage watches, condition is everything.

  • It's a bit nouveau riche.

Virtually every rich person is nouveau riche now days. I've only met a handful of old money types over the years. One chap who springs to mind is a social worker who lives in Camberwell who is worth £50m+ because his great great grandfather made some cash in India doing what British colonial types did and subsequent generations made good decisions.

For the record, he doesn't wear a watch 😂

  • I'm using "nouveau riche in the tasteless sense of the meaning, not specifically "new money"

  • Cavendish and Alaphilippe race in RMs but Roglic is a Tissot ambassador...

  • Honestly if I was given one, I would be over the moon.

I would immediately sell it and pay off my mortgage.

  • What if you were lent one to wear?

Are the celebs getting them ''for free'' to keep as a payment for promotion? Or are these watches being ''rented'' and they get paid to wear them for a bit?

  • I’d give them the wrong name.

  • Had demagnetise this with the cheap Chinese kit, I forget how much I love the SKX, let see if it stopped going 2-3 extra minutes a day now.

  • That green one

  • Up for selling my Ebel sportwave to help fund a new bike build. I paid £665 from a Brighton South laine jewellers 2-3 years ago. No paperwork and fits nicely on my skinny 17cm wrist but only one spare link. Does £400 including best postage sound like a forum friendly price? I'm not trying to sell it on this thread just asking for some feedback on price? Going rate seems to be £600 but not sure how much the smallish sized bracelet and lack of papers affects the price even though its in nice condition.
