So back story to this build - A few years ago, my father said he wanted a new bike, his brief was:
- a town bike
- up right position
- low maintance
- Not too heavy
So I built him this:
(this was pre fit so it looks a bit extreme)He really liked it, and it got him back into cycling again. Now he cycles with a group of his chums, the go out on runs to their various local café, have a snack and come back - I call them the flying bullingdons'.
Over the last year or so they have started going a bit further and started going mildy off road - canal paths, foresty trails etc. Which my dad likes, but he struggles with only having 30c tyres. So he's started to use the bike I built up to leave at my parents house:
Turns out he really likes the bigger tyres, however the reach is long and when you have arthritis in your hands, espcially your thumbs, rim brakes and friction shifters are not great:
So, I thought "I'm going to build him something better as a suprise" and, I had just sold my old Scott to @lmananimal - it was always a wee bit small for me but it would be perfect for my dad, so I bought it back:
First step, paint. My team Danish design consultants came up with the idea of picking a colour based on his first car, in this case a Morris Traveller in coffee brown. So, I went for matte RAL 8025:
I also got a spare stayer gaspipe stem I had done in gloss black
and some cable guides added so I can easily use hydralic brakes without adaptors
- a town bike

Your Danish consultant is well known for their fondness of earthy hues

the man is back at it again, making extremely tasteful functional bikes at a sensible logical increment!!

For the build itself I have decided to go back to the 26" wheels the frame was designed for. I was using 650b x 2" G-one; they worked perfectly, but pushed the stand over height up a bit too far for my dad. So I have:
Frame - Scott Summit X @Hulsroy
Fork - Kona P2
Wheels - Hope Pro 2's on Mavic X223 rims (pictured above)
Tyres - 1.9" Conti Doublefighters
Headset - FSA Orbit XL
Stem - Stayer Gaspipe
Bars - Knock off Jones loop bars with Ergon Grips
Seatpost - BBB Sky Scraper
Saddle - Brooks B17 (brown), which is his prefered saddle
Cranks - Shimano SLX FC-M675 + eBay black Narrowwide
Brakes - Shimano BL-MT400
Gears - SRAM GX rear mech with an X5 shifter
Cassette - some wide range 46t
Pedals - Wellgo platforms
Rack - little SJS one that goes on V brake bosses + black Wald 137 -

@BareNecessities One of them loves them yes, so they approved greatly.
@Maj many thanks, hopefully my dad will be a proud wanker hybrid rider when I'm done with him, turning heads across the Welsh hillsides.

It looks so good. Do you have a picture of his first car?
Also, what bars and groupset?

I'll have to ask my mother if they have any photos of the actual car, but its this model but a bit more faded by the time they owned it (theirs had a cream roof too)
It also had had seatbelts retroactivcly fitted by a previous owner, which was handy when they accidently rolled it. They were driving though the Cambridgeshire fens in the depth of winter, and hit a big patch of black ice - the car slipped sideways into a ditch and rolled.
As for groupset, look at the post above yours.

You're amazing dude, and the bike's gonna be fantastic. :)

Think the bike needs cream saddle and wood effect rear rack!

Awesome project! I'm sure it will make him very happy. Good vibes :)

Any updates on the Dadbike?

Yes, almost finished I think I just need some mudguards (prob. SKS Bluemel) and a safety pizza.
Handlebars had slipped so they wouldn't be staying at that angle and his seat post wouldnt be nearly as high.

this is what the ideal bike looks like

Looking great fun, such a nice gift, I found the little brooks spanner if you want it dude.

High praise indeed - I will post better photos once I get the pizza/mudguards fitted

Oh thanks for the kind offer, you actually gave me one and a little tub of proofhide too though.

I came across another one in the tool box and couldn't remember if I did give you it, check the one I gave you isn't just a random spanner, I'm not too far away if you need it :)

As I mentioned before, my dad as been using this bike
Which, as you can tell has some very looooong reach bullmose
As, even more me they're long and i'll be selling this bike to a friend who is a little shorter, I decided to find something better. Within 3 mins of searching eBay I found this setup for cheap, which will be perfect
I just need to pick up 20mm of 1" spacers to hide the quill adaptor and the bike will have the perfect clunker feel.
