  • This reissue is not bad but they managed to get glue all over the first track on the A side. I can get the glue off but where's it been pressed in there's clicks of course.

It used to be a lottery whether you'd get a decent pressing. Now the factories are making it easy, there's no longer any prizes.

  • Listening to Depth Charge now, one of my all time favourite tunes... I need to grab a copy of that!

  • Maybe living in a rural area makes it harder when that’s only one store…

Which I currently can’t even see despite being here an hour before opening.

  • What you getting?

  • This is the list:

    • [ ] Steely Dan - Everything must go
    • [ ] Steely Dan - Two against nature
    • [ ] Deftones - Digital bath
    • [ ] Fela Kuti - open & close
    • [ ] Kristin Hersh - Wyatt at the coyote palace
    • [ ] Marika Hackman - Sugar Blind & Deaf Heat EP
    • [ ] Mark Lanegan - Here comes that weird chill
    • [ ] Nubiya Garcia - source
    • [ ] Tune Yards - Whokill
  • Good luck!

  • Been here two hours. Still at least 30 people ahead of me

  • Lots of people queuing in the sunshine since the early morning in Twickenham.
    Gotta love Eel Pie Records.

  • This one :- VPRL2526 has a bonus disk of vocal versions.

It's cut well enough, pressing as discussed is Jamaican style but there's next to no other copies around. If you had a '74 pressing of that would you sell it? :) I know I wouldn't. I'll probably keep this one despite the fault.

My favourite dub record is King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown. I've never seen an early copy, but felt lucky to even get a repress without problems.

Couldn't find a 7 or 12 inch listing for Depth Charge.

  • [X] Steely Dan - Everything must go

7 out of 9. Not bad.

I was queuing for three hours. When I left there we’re at least 80 people still waiting.

Apparently the queue started yesterday morning. 🤯

  • I'd love an OG copy of Pick a Dub but even when I was buying a lot of vinyl it was gonna cost hundreds, I've been listening to mp3s of it for twenty years! And I was listening to that version you mention in the car today on Spotify...

I've got a 7" of Rockers Uptown on Island, it's a beaut! I'd do almost anything for Depth Charge on 45, I very nearly got one cut at Vinyl Carvers BITD just so I could play it out...

  • Whenever I've been digging for this kind of thing I've never found any. I've picked up a few original dub lp pressings by chance but mostly with faults. Probably should spend more on fewer records now. I've got so many it would make sense.

Been buying quite a bit of new techno and enjoying that though.

  • King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown

Friend of mine is selling a copy, seems expensive IMHO but I can ask him about it the next time I'm there, his shop is in Camden Market.

    https://www.discogs.com/sell/item/1143261123

I'll ask him about depth charge also.

  • That is the upper limit of anything I'm spending on a single album. I have sold one or two in that area price wise, it would all rest on condition. Good to know there's a copy around though.

With the Two Sevens Clash pressing, do you have the 3 disk one? I'm finding the extra disks have decent sound quality. The main album seems a bit thin but enjoyable with a bit of eq.

  • I was queuing at Rough Trade East from 6am and was way past Poppie’s chippy. Mate turned up to join me 15 mins before opening, and was shepherded to near the front. Were in by 8.30, got all we wanted (not much, just Lanegan, FSOL and Camplight for me) and home for breakfast. People near me in the original queue were probably there for 3hrs.

  • Now I'm certain its a dodgy copy, only got one disc. Cover also looks like it's been bodged together with clip art and is full of spelling mistakes. #nowlistening

Enjoying the hype around rsd, shows just how much of an appetite there is for vinyl.

  • So many bootlegs out there. Reggae has a long history of rights disputes, lax licensing and bootlegs.

Try the new one especially if you can get a look at it or are able to return it if it's not right. Recorded it yesterday and it played all the way through with only a bit of cardboard on the needle at the end of side 5! All sounding great though, or at least it did after I got into the right state of mind :)

As far as I know the label is on a push to get a lot of reissues out there but of course the 3 disk set ends up quite expensive.

Like you I'm happy to see people loving the vinyls! I've not seen much in the way of sales since the shops opened again though. Like most people I'm getting out and enjoying a bit of shopping too though.

I hope the factories can sort themselves out though. There's no point in pressing all these records if they're badly done.

  • A mate of mine released some stuff for U-Roy, all legit, the artwork he got given (by the man himself!) was mostly old bootleg sleeves that weren't in very good condition at all... Made me smile...

  • Love U-Roy. I have an '86 copy of Dread In A Babylon and one of the recent reissues. There's not much in it. That cover though! Got a Live At The Lyceum 12" with Runaway Girl & Chalice In The Palace on, the album versions are brilliant though.

Have you read Bass Culture by Lloyd Bradley. Lots of great stories about the artists and labels. I guess a lot of reggae artists are like U-Roy, never really able to capitalise of the brilliant output.

Made me think of Prince Far I - Under Heavy Manners. Classic dub cover art :)

  • My old bandmate, Dig, started out wanting to make a documentary about dub... He got the runaround quite a bit, chasing ghosts, etc... Then he managed to organise a meet with Bunny Lee through an intermediary, he was told he'd meet him at a barbers shop in Harlesden... No one showed up on the first day, he came back the second day and just waited around, eventually Bunny Lee sidled up and said hello...

They became great friends, put out loads of music together, Dig went out to Jamaica and spent time with the family, etc... He's recorded with Lee Perry, U-Roy, Bunny and loads of others... Amazing story... Pressure Sounds is his label, you might even own some of his catalogue!

  • Madness!
I just waltzed in very lye afternoon.
I wanted to go see Vinyl Pimp at 93 east, but was only open for 3 hours for some reason, so popped into rough trade.
    Got FSOL as well.

  • I have got a couple of them, Prince Jammy - Strictly Dub and Phil Pratt & The Sunshot Band - Dial M For Murder.

It's always been my experience that there's some initial shyness with reggae artists but once you get past that it's a really friendly scene. I lived in Southampton for a while in the early '90s, had a great time in the shebeens.

  • Dread in a Babylon is such a good album and one if the best covers ever!!

  • Great story! Did he ever make the documentary?

  • Pressure Sounds

Excellent label and story. Harlesden is definitely a bit spiritual home for reggae in London. Bbmc still going strong in Wilsden green.
