I read the book so long ago I can't remember the deets.

Did they not think their bike would make it?

Nope - if I recall they, quite reasonably, wouldn’t give them the bikes for free.

They could have done that trip on DR650s / KLR650s or even DRZ400s with near zero problems I reckon. Might not have made for such dramatic TV.

Just imagine the alternate reality where they. All those City bike bays packed with DR650s with ALL THE PANNIERS and the riders rocking ~~Police~~ Polite vests.
