Fucking hell

Was kind of hoping the article was bullshit but sadly it appears not. It's a thing that is happening.
Seems weird though, given the Supreme Court stance on cruel and unusual punishment. That said, the chair has been used recently. As has the firing squad. (2010 and 2018)

boggles my mind that the death penalty is still being used.

Incredibly it's a very popular thing. If it went to referendum in the UK we'd have it too.
-
• #64457
Well, let's not even talk about referendums eh

Would be right out of the Priti Patel playbook wouldn't it? Populist policy to win votes...

I reckon it's on her list when Rupert Murdoch installs her as PM...

I couldn't tell from that article - when they say last execution by gas ~20 years ago was it the same stuff? I don't really want to know though. Murder-by-state is just horrific by any method.

I'm fairly sure the actual poisonous agent is cyanide in the normal method in the US, but not clear on how they produced it.
I'm vehemently opposed to the death penalty of any kind but I think it's worth pointing out that pro death penalty groups have argued for the use of nitrogen asphyxiation as the ideal execution method. You basically fall asleep with no sensation of struggling for breath or pain before you die. Cheap and considerably less agonising than cyanide. Choosing cyanide is basically torture and execution.

Am I not a joke to you?

There'll no doubt be a hat developed to wear to defend against it. I'm guessing tin foil would make it worse. Maybe lead?

I think the gas method of execution has come up because the USA is finding it hard to source sodium thiopental used in lethal injections.
This is because the EU won’t sell them it for the purpose of executionhttps://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-16281016.amp
