  • What are people's thoughts on retiring shoes after certain distances? I've just been told by Strava that my Nike Air Structure have done 700km (which was a surprise). I've never been enamoured massively with this shoe and to be honest it looks pretty good still, everything still in good nick. But I wonder how much cushion is left in the midsole. I am a fairly light guy, a shade under 70kg.

I guess you could say I am an 'overpronator' so generally stick to stability shoes, I have just ordered a pair of Arahi 5 from Hoka. They do a 30 day 'trial' where you can return if you don't get on with them. I listened to a podcast yesterday on the topic of pronation, discussing how to certain extent 'over' pronation is a bit of a myth, or at least misunderstood by most. But given that my running is going okay at the moment and I've had some niggling injuries from the past that still linger, I'm inclined to err on the side of caution.

The colours of these Arahi are really poor though. I have heard lots of good things about the Clifton and am tempted by the Clifton Edge (heel striker here) just on the basis of some of these CW's ... https://www.hokaoneone.eu/en/gb/men-road/clifton-edge/1110510.html?dwvar_1110510_color=NCLR

  • After years of running in inov8s and the, falling apart after 300km, I’m still Working out what retirement time is and I think @Greenbank has it right you can feel when shoes lose their bounce and see if they are falling apart, both pair I’ve worn out this year were feeling dead after about 500km so they got downgraded to easy runs for another 150k and now they are treadmill shoes, pair one is now closer to 900km and the other is about to hit treadmill status. The 900km pair are mostly used for walking the dog now...
