Still looked to me like a fuelling/ drink issue. He didn’t appear to have any bidons on his bike.

I think the steepness of the gradient made it look worse than it actually was. Once the gradient lessened he limited his losses well. It could have been fuelling, or he could have had an off day after the rest day.
