  • Erm, I was being sarcastic, Bernal lost bugger all because of his brakes, just a handful of seconds because of his (entirely sensible) caution. I was pointing out that the huge superiority of disc brakes appears to be less humongous than we have been led to expect.

  • I mean if he had locked his wheels, he would have either gone over his bars, or skidded down the mountain anyway.

What wheels were Bernal on? They seemed to say he wasn’t on lightweights today.

  • They didn't save Gorka Izagirre today, did they?

Everyone knows that the limiting factor in the braking equation is the grip between tyre and road. Rim or disc brakes are equally capable of reaching a braking force that breaks that grip.

I completely understand why pros would use rim brakes where possible, as they are lighter etc. I don't understand why a normal consumer would bother with them unless they are already pushing the limits of bike weight already...

Bernal was on deeper wheels, apparently INEOS changed to them after they cut the first 2 climbs out.

  • There was rumour he had a mechanical - did that go any further?

Of course it could've been he lost his nerve after that or he flatted on the rocks he rode over but Kelly was talking about possible mechanical.
