  • Wow, Malice for Quake!

I had it on a pirate CD full of Quake & Quake II mods that my Ukrainian grandparents bought at a Kyiv market.

The Ukrainian piracy market was huge, dedicated shops selling professionally pressed, retail packaged warez with printed covers and manuals. Often the games would be modded to translate into Russian, with comedy soviet-era voiceovers for all characters done by a single monotone dude, as was the norm for pirate TV stations out of Poland in the Soviet days that would show Western movies across the border with similarly ridiculous voiceovers.

  • Yeah, he went on to work with Ratloop and then we kinda lost contact for years when we went to different unis. Last time I bumped into him he'd just finished some racing game on Nintendo. He was always very talented with music and software so ending up writing audio engines and making music for games seems kinda natural.

We had computer swap meets in Oz and there'd always be dudes selling CDs full of pirate shit. :) We were at one that got busted. That was funny.
