  • I remeber being amazed that I could chat shit to my mate who was a few blocks away in country Australia with both of us playing Descent (probs a free version off a magazine?) over the phone lines. He went on to code a commercial Quake reskin (https://gamicus.fandom.com/wiki/Malice_(mod)) and last I heard was working for Nintendo.

I also remember spending all night trying to get one of our guy's machines connected via coax cable and eventually mind blown we solved it and could play Doom in lan party before the phrase existed. I don't know what was going on but I remember lots of junk food and somethign about UART.

I played a free version of Descent for months and months. I remember clear as day that it came on a floppy disk on a magazine and was limited to only two levels. Didn't hold me back though!

  • That sounds about right although I assumed it was on CD ROM but when did CDROMs come out? I didn't actually like the game itself but it was the first time I'd ever communicated using computer over a phone line. It was amazing being able to chat shit with someone that wasn't at the other end of a voice call and interact within the game.
