  • Ah sorry dude I forgot you were based in Ireland!

  • Don't you have a BMW estate - strap it to the top?

  • Lol, at one point I was considering renting a van and driving over. If only I’d known I’d have bought some bits in London before we moved home.

  • Wife inherited a pile of furniture from her godmother a few years back that has been in storage in Ireland while we lived in London. Finally getting through some of it, and this was in one of the first palettes, an original Arkana tulip table. It has a rosewood veneer, but there was a black tempered glass cover made for it to match the kitchen it lived in during its latter years. Need to pick up some chairs to match it now!

  • Consider a used HM Aeron

This is pretty great universal advice. With quite a few around they’re not too expensive.

  • A bit more USM jiggery pokery, moved into the office and added the filing cabinet that was a tv stand (serif now)

  • Got sad about how shit and expensive most modern furniture is so bought something mid-century on eBay and will attempt to restore it. Any tips?

  • what work does it require?

  • Nothing really, it's just tatty and showing it's 60 years

  • might be easier with a photo when you get it but I usually try to repair anything damaged, clean as best as possible and retain the natural wear.

  • Sand down with 50 grit paper, paint with blackboard paint and write Live, Laugh, Love in various chalk pens all over it.

  • Sounds pretty funky. I like that. LoL

  • Our strategy is to clean thoroughly, clean again and then oil generally goes wonders already. Is it solid wood or veneer "woodchip board"?
Regluing joints if necessary also works well to give it a new lease of life. If it is a dowel construction I tapped the boards loose with a rubber mallet, reglued and repressed with big ass screw clamps.
But yeah, put a photo up, then the hivemind can give some advice

  • Hate Aeron's. So if you hate Aeron's, also consider Steelcase Leap V2's. Far better IMO for several reasons, but YMMV.

  • Anyone looking to buy some g-plan stuff?

We have shelves, sideboards / highboard, dining table, chairs, 2 x bookcases (may not be actual g-plan, but g-planish 70s).

Also have 70's wooden armchairs & footstools.

Let me know, and I can get photos up.

  • Send over a pic of the armchair and maybe shelves if no hassle?

    Cheers

  • Shelves

The armchairs will be tomorrow when we're back in the house & can take more photos.

  • I think a clean and oil will do the trick. Will likely also get rid of the waterstains on top.

  • Liquid Gold wood cleaner should do it.

  • More 70s beige and g-plan if anyone is interested. Some TLC needed.

  • We bought some nice chairs.

They arrived. They are nice. But they rock. In a bad way.

Is it possible that half an inch between the bottom of a leg and the floor can be attributed to our (admittedly somewhat shonky) floor?

  • Got any plate glass windows or a mirror big enough to check?

To be fair to the makers, it's very hard to get a small four legged thing 100% even, but 12.5mm is too much.
