Given how fun Raleigh Twentys and the like are to ride, I bet this is a blast. If I had the money I'd be all over it.

And 20" wheels are just the best size you can get. Does seem like a lot of money for the bike imo.

Would it be insane to put a bafang motor on one of these..?

My unqualified thoughts:

The motor would be spinning at 50% extra RPM compared to a 700c wheel, but it might appreciate because I don't think the hub motors enjoy low speed high torque. However, at high speeds you'll be running the thing at 50% greater RPM than the engineers had bargained for. No idea if that's a bad thing or not.

You'll also need quite short spokes indeed if you get one of the larger hub motors, which I would avoid because of the risk of it bucking into massive wheelies. The rear wheel is not far behind your centre of mass.

If we're talking hub motor, bafang already make those for 20" (406) wheels.

Or at least they have a model that come fitted to some new folding ebikes, not sure if that's available aftermarket.

I was thinking mid-drive motor but have less than zero knowledge on these things. I just think it'd be mad amounts of fun!

You would generally program the motor for the wheel size.

This is all AIUI and assuming the speed sensor is on the wheel / spokes, if you put a larger wheel on a motor programmed for a smaller wheel you will theoretically (I’ve not tried it!) go faster, because you’re slowing the time it takes to make one rotation by increasing the circumference..

Conversely; If I put a motor programmed for 700c wheels on a 20” wheel I would expect it to go slower / hit the 16mph cap faster.

I’m talking about mid drive too, no idea with regards to hub motors but I’ve seen lots of very small wheel with very large motors built into them

Really dislike large things being described as man sized. Both height-ist and vaguely sexist. “You need to be this tall to be a real man!” And if you are a tall woman you are automatically more manly.

Almost as bad as referring to a bike as “she” - alway have a slew of customers claim to have “ridden her hard this winter fnar fnar”

Do agree with this - its this kind of language in the bike world that we all use without much thought - often just clumsy and lazy- but none the less bullshit -I find myself doing it and Im always thankful when someone calls me out on it ... learning

I was watching the episode of The IT crown where the boss goes out with the Woman “from Iran” and was thinking it didn’t age well. It’s important to learn and grow, otherwise we’ll end up with people my age (30-40) being sexist and transphobic like our grandparents generation tended to be systematically racist.

It’s important to challenge these things and it’s unfortunately just so prevalent in “the bike world”

I’ve been guilty of it in the past as I’m sure most have but flagging it and raising awareness can only help promote inclusivity
