Wasn't aware of that, but anyway I thought one of the main Brexit motivations was free trading with everyone (where possible) so why charge vat on imports from China?

Only way you're going to avoid paying VAT on imports is if you're part of a customs union. We used to be part of a customs union with 27 of our largest trading partners. It's called the EU.
