  • Looks great with the Cannondale fork. Try 42c Resolutes.

    What PSI in the byways?

  • Somewhere around here, I have a nice route if you want?

  • What PSI in the byways?

They're actually Horizons, tried 40psi on road and dropped to 20ish offroad, very forgiving at that volume, but still not to be trusted in fast corners.

I will probably use 700c for the next bikepacking trip tho, mostly due to clearance on the Surly

  • Self-amalgamating gravel?

  • I wanted a carbon, flat mounted, thru axled frame for 550. Looked at the carbonda 696 (nearly ordered), flirted with the idea of an alloy Checkpoint (over budget) - but then this turned up on eBay for 550 brand new (tiny chip on seat stay). It’s exactly what I need, for mostly road, and ticks all the generic gravel bike boxes. Blurry top tube was free

  • I'd be interested in the route if you wouldn't mind; that's not far from the sister-in-law and her brood. Her other half rides a bit, so if we could get a joint pass out, it would be a welcome escape from the hordes of small children on the next visit! Cheers.

  • On One - Space Chicken

  • I read that as 'get a joint and pass out'....

  • Big boi bike.

Love the monster cross vibes. Opinons on tyres ? Or too early to tell?

  • Quite like the feather, but not sure what it is... road +

Next bike will be pink (i just wanna be like @Velocio), quite fancy a mosaic.

  • My parts-bin gravel bike, photographed this morning as ridden yesterday. The south west is incredibly dry right now.

  • so good, the yellows make it

  • @RecoveryRide @ectoplasmosis Here is one of the routes that go through there, I have longer ones if you prefer. The stump pictured is in the woods at about 46.9km of the route.

  • Thank you. That route actually looks like it goes within a mile of the SIL's doorstep, so even better. Appreciated.

  • now this is a bike

  • Enjoying it? My only niggle with the big tyres is that I think I'll be buying a second wheelset before long. Mine was always intended as a do-it-all bike so I think I'll be wanting some more road friendly wheels.

It's not necessarily a bad thing.

  • @Zed only had a short ride but the tyres were amazing around the woods, felt more confident both on the rough stuff and under braking.

I wanted mezcals but none in stock in 27.5, after looking around these Hutchinsons had what looked a decent tread pattern - read a review which said they there too hard/stiff. I’ve had a lot of issues with tubeless in the past with light weight supple tyres getting cuts that won’t seal, so I actually thought a tougher tyre could work better for me. They’re noticeably stiffer and thicker than peyotes/gravelking/g one all round - I’m taking it as a positive - we’ll see.

I have got a spare set of 700 wheels I was thinking about trying with 700x42, or bigger if they’ll go in. One thing I’m thinking though is 38x11 is going to be a bit spinny for faster mixed surface rides, I’m going to do a few commutes and see how I get on. (Commute is 50/50 woods and tarmac)

  • What make/model dropper are you using on your Hook?

    Cheers

  • It's a 125 drop 27.2 KS Lev post I got off here. With a PNW lever. Internal routing was a bit fiddly to set up first time (having never done it before), but has been a big improvement for riding considering how little it cost.

  • There is a lot of conversation in this thread centered around how boring and trendy bikes are, you see it in the HH threads too. I've been thinking about the kind of monoculture that has been steadily taking over since the mid 2000's (people in Columbus Ohio, London, Cambridge, Pittsburgh and Chicago dress similarly, go to the same kinds of cafes, listen to the same kinds of music, etc.) and it strikes me that even if culture has kind of smoothed out and stagnated in the last 15 odd years, bikes definitely have not. Dangle mugs are already passé! My Longitude is utterly of its time being a bike packing bike with 135mm QR forkends and straight 1 1/8" headtube and it's only 5 years old! Not saying that it's a good or bad thing (these changes do tend to be marketing driven after all) but cycling is pretty dynamic.
