I had somewhat assumed the rear lights are nice simple gizmo's that just plug into the front and would be broadly cross-compatible.
With one or two annoying exceptions (Supernova) they are. In fact the front light just passes the dynamo power straight through (if it's switched on) and all of the smarts (standlight etc) are in the rear light.

Aha, okay thanks - that was I was clumsily getting at - the compatibility. I had somewhat assumed the rear lights are nice simple gizmo's that just plug into the front and would be broadly cross-compatible.
And all the cabling looks fairly straightforward to do yourself - any particular tips much appreciated
