  • Back to rowing day 1 today, back out in a scull felt amazing. Then caught a crab outside Harrods’ repository, and went in.
    Self-rescued and carried on.
Feel a little queasy now- hopefully just psychosomatic.

May do a day trip to “the wave” on Friday if everything lines up right.

  • Nice, miss rowing. I was always a pairs man though, something magical about a balanced pair.

  • Yeah there was a sweep pair out from LRC, amazing.

  • The Bristol wave? Would be interested to know how that goes. My brother and I disagree on whether it's worth it. I say its predominantly onshore because of its orientation (epic fail), so even on the "pro" mode will rarely produce a barrel, so might as well surf onshore Saunton all afternoon. He reckons it'll be fun anyway, cos machine and constant fun.
Its probably I'm just jealous of other countries' setups which are so much better with exactly the same tech.
Should be offshore on Friday tho.

  • I can see the river by Harrods from where I am - up in the tower in Charing Cross hospital! Glorious day to be on the water, I used to row there when I was at school. They used to joke that you would have to have your stomach pumped if you fell in, but apparently the water is actually quite safe...

  • Your view definitely beats my normal A&E no natural light life!
The last time I fell in here I was at school- incidentally- even the same place!

  • The wave look decent imo.

Friend posted a snap that I assumed was somewhere much nicer. 😎

  • Haha I definitely went in at least a couple of times. And I did my time in A&E too - now up in theatres on the 14th floor. The view across London is one of the few perks of the job!

  • Watched this last night. Absolutely beautiful. The dude is an extraordinary surfer.

  • Oh no! I’ve fallen in more times than I care to remember. Self rescue is impressive. I’m itching to get my single off the rack but it’s been so long and I’m nervous I’ve forgotten. Went out in an 8 the other morning with a load of people I’ve been rowing with on and off for YEARS and though we weren’t speedy it was smooth as silk.

  • I've been twice. The high concrete sides protect the actual wave face from any wind I think. But I've not been on a really windy day.

It's also the most knackering thing. I'm definitely not surf fit enough to make the most of it! Sitting out back and chilling is part of the fun of surfing and you don't get that. I doubt I'll go again

  • Who do you row with? I’d really like to get in to a regular sweep 8, but solo is pretty fun.
    Tideway course to come

  • no way...ask me about my rowing past some time....

  • Barnes Bridge Ladies - I’m inferring that that may not be the club for you! We share a boathouse with Cygnet who are lovely guys and super friendly - may not be the most high performance club in the river but that might be ok if you’re time constrained and looking for leisure rather than rowing at Henley

  • I had a similar experience, Caught the first two waves. Then was nearly sick from paddling, the rip is very strong to paddle against. No time to chill. Good chips and beer afterwards though!

  • I enjoyed that watch, cool blaag too...

  • huh - didn't realise you had to paddle - I thought the point of these things was that you could run back up the line and jump in at the takeoff zone! How does it actually work ? - they just have a max number of people in the water for a sesh and its up to usual surf etiquette for catching waves and paddling back out ?

  • Beautiful video, thanks!

  • That left, so good

Kelly's pool next on the junk tennis tour, perfect but hard to beat natural waves

  • Bit of a thread hijack but I don't want to put it in classifieds. Probably a bit niche for here but, you never know...

I have for sellz a well used Jackson SUPercharger river running SUP in a very fetching orange. Perfect for rocky UK rivers

It's huge, weighs a ton, is nigh on indestructible, and a fantastic, stable (strong and stable, I suppose you'd say) river runner.

9'8" long, 36" wide, 8" thick, weighs about 25 kilos.

It has a recessed deck with thicIk, grippy foam pads. Has a single fin which is a bit bent but still does the job. I should imagine you could get a replacement from someone like Kent Canoes, but I was never bothered. You don't need it for river running anyroad

    I'm in Northampton

    £300

Circumnagivation of UK on a SUP. Brendan, through his charity work, provides free water safety sessions to schools.

  • I was kayaking at studland today and saw someone on an e-foil. Looked like a lot of fun. He eventually returned to his yacht so I paddled over to find out what it was.

He said they cost about 7 grand(!). He also asked if I wanted a go, I bottled it and said no (too many expensive crafts around!).

He said he sometimes follows the red funnel ferry from Southampton to isle of wight and once he is in the wake of the ferry he does not need to power the foil.

  • Not sure if asking here or in the touring thread: anyone any experiences of packrafts? Seen mention of kokepelli and backcountry.Scot does alpacka boats. Floating/exploring rivers in the U.K. seems quite attractive in the current climate!
