• Finished it and went to drop off a tarp. The rims didn’t see the trails the way they should have. Stem bag by @benana

  • Looks like good fun

  • My cousin came round for new cranks as he didn’t like the look of the fat old Specialized ones. Neither do I but they didn’t hang around in the classifieds. He also ditched the Planet X bullmoose bars and bought some north road style bars and a new stem instead. Those bullmoose feel weird imo, bike feels amazing now. Yellows don’t match though.

Weirdly his 1x10 setup which is more or less identical to the one on the trek just works so much better. Not sure where the issue is on the trek but I can’t index the gears to the point where one of them doesn’t click and sound like it’s about to change up or down.

  • Looking good!

Have you checked the derailleur hanger alignment? My old British Eagle frame had similar symptoms until I borrowed a tool to check; it was way out of whack and worked perfectly after straightening.

  • Thanks, good suggestion I’ll have to try that somehow.

  • @Alban I got a derailleur hanger alignment tool my dude. Just WhatsApp me and come grab it.

  • yesssss matey thanks. Also noted this morning a bit of play in the freehub which I imagine could also be the source of some sloppy shifting. Seems I have some pretty niche 90s shimano hub with a 'Silent Clutch' which makes buying a replacement freehub body impossible. Looks like wheel build time...

  • I had an earlier blizzard off here bitd for peanuts.

Nice frames. Seen silly asking prices in the states

  • Ah nice, yeah I also got it off here and it was a steal. Rolling chassis

  • Wow, this is gonna be good.

  • Yeah I’m excited! Swapped the tyres and added a few more bits to the mock up just now. Probably go for different bars, but might try flat for a bit to begin with. Need chainrings... So begins a painful hunt for 94bcd Narrow wide. The brakes need a full strip and service which might be painful too

  • Oh I really like that RM

  • @t0-ster will be able to shed some light on when the next batch of chainrings arrive

  • Those cranks looks great on black! I read about kooka developing a crack but it definitely looks gorgeous

  • Oh yeah that’s the other thing, the cranks are cracked tae hell. And the NDS extraction thread is gone too. Potentially not worth the effort of finding a chainring and risky to ride. The deore alternatives just don’t look as good.

  • Serviced the XTR M951 v brakes this week which was a fiddly wee task but pretty satisfying. So much grime in there. Terrible photos but you get the idea.

I won’t bother describing it, I found a tutorial just by searching. Quite surprising each brake arm has two bearing seats each with 15 or so tiny little bearings inside, allowing the brake arms to rotate around the canti studs, all of about 15 degrees rotation. I cleaned every mf bearing individually and was well happy with myself not to lose any of them.

  • Gone down the triple route on the cranks in the end, mismatching some chainrings I had onto this raceface crankset. Not the same model or colour as the originals but the same brand. How the hell do I remove that self extracting crank bolt though?

  • Pin spanner, or if they’re not in too tight then a spare spoke bent appropriately.

  • It's riding. That is not to say it is finished, of course. It is surprisingly light and rides great after some final tweaks. Who knew, for example, that you needed 2mm of spacers on the freehub of these old mavic crossrides to make sure the cassette didn't make the whole thing sounds like a tin can full of ball bearings?! Getting used to a rapid rise derailleur is weird too.

These threaded spinner forks on there have a 390mm A2C measurement, and the bike was spec'd for Rock Shox Mag21 forks which supposedly have a 405mm A2C measurement. I've bought some Pace RC31s with a 420mm A2C measurement which I'm going to try out. I'm not convinced the slacker head angle will feel as nice but I've wanted to have a set of those forks for ages. So that means a different headset and stem too which is a shame because I like the colour scheme at the moment (although black chainrings would be preferable).

  • Also to anyone thinking about it - don't dip your fancy drilled XTR lever barrel adjusters in strong degreaser as the nice gun metal finish comes straight off. Hand>Face.

  • Same as cassette lockrings in ultrasonic cleaners.

  • That is a peng build @Alban. Glad to hear it rides well. I love a whippy MTB.

Don't worry about denuding the brake adjuster - the silver finish nicely matches the lever now. It's all good.

  • Love everything about this, especially the huge chainring.

Not sure RC31s would suit the build tbh, although maybe if they’re the earlier version with silver crown and dropouts...

  • Thanks pal - I regard your appreciation highly ;) Thanks too to @ectoplasmosis - agreed I'm not convinced myself. The current forks suit it very well. The pace forks are these ones. It is blasphemous to take the big decals off? 😏
