  • SLX is where it's at. XTR if you're Nino.

The busted up Maguras on the Inbred still work, just. But if I ever get around to making it a proper MTB it's getting Shimano.

Persistence conquers resistance though, so good luck :)

  • have plenty of spare BH90

    SELL SELL SELL!

I've ended up with Hope Hose for my Shimano/Hope setup as could not get BH90 anywhere.
To be fair, its £5 a metre and appears of better quality than Shimano stuff, so if it works it works. Otherwise it's off to the mtb to replace a kinked hose.

Should mention my Hope X2 Evo Race on the rear of my bike has now done thousands of miles, still bites and stops me despite not being bled since purchase on 07/04/2014. £173.99 well spent.

  • did not know that! link to shimano compatible hope hose?

  • TRPBAD obvs * shrugs *

  • New bleed screws arriving tomorrow. I called Tarty Bikes, they reckon that whilst 0.5Nm isn't much it's also required for the o-ring to seal correctly, and that the piston will be drawing air in through there and squirting oil out whenever said piston goes past the transfer ports between the reservoir and the master cylinder.

  • Perfect excuse for getting one of these

  • I ordered one last night.

  • Wait, so... a combination of fluid loss and air?

  • Fluid loss leads to ingress of air, no?

  • I thought that the chances of my judging 0.5Nm correctly were close to zero, a replacement lever body is the cost of the torque driver, so I could justify it.

I'm hoping that the EBT screw is what has threaded and not the lever body - I'll see when the new screws turn up tomorrow.

  • It’s just bog standard Hope hose. What’s .1 of a mm when olives and barbs are involved... extra turn will sort that right out.

  • The last ~5 pages here are not helping my ill-conceived opinion that discs are witchcraft, hydraulic discs particularly.

  • FWIW I've never had problems with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. This journey into the world of Magura has been very interesting from that perspective.

  • I've shortened the hoses and bled my Hopes on Sunday. It took a whole of 15 minutes and had zero issues. Even re used the same barbs and olives.

  • If you want to go one better than the Hope hose get either Goodrich or Uberbike do a Kevlar braided hose which you'll very much struggle to get to swell.

I went from Hope to Uberbike and it's a marked improvement

  • Then you sold them, right?

  • No I got another pair to keep them company.

  • Pads and pins in, pad spacers in place, the rear brake is now adjusting evenly on the front rear two pistons, lower two have (because Goblins) now reversed what they were doing and the inner of the two pistons is adjusting whilst the outer piston stays put. I am taking this as progress.

Lever feel is firm front and rear, but the bike point on the front comes a lot sooner in the lever travel than for the rear - is this a function of hose length, or something else?

  • the bike point on the front comes a lot sooner in the lever travel than for the rear - is this a function of hose length, or something else?

Yeah could be, my SRAM levers have always had a nearer bite point for the front, braided hoses might improve that.

  • Yeah I experience similar across every brand I've used.
With my sram brakes I've got the bleed process to the point the front and rear feel like they have the bite point very close to each other but the rear always just feels a tiny bit more spongey rather than the lever traveling further than the front.

I feel it's more one of these things that feels very noticeable while working on the bike on the garage squeezing the levers like a mad man. But never actually notice it while riding.

  • Shimano lever with free stroke adjust and Hope's BPC means that both levers can be set up to feel equal IME

  • free stroke adjust

I always wondered about the free stroke adjust on shimano, I could never get it to do what I thought it was supposed to! The last set of xt's I had, it honestly didn't seem to do anything at all no matter where I set it to.

Even the contact point adjuster on sram codes doesn't work the way you'd expect. You have to set it in the opposite direction of what the manual says for it to have any meaningful effect...

  • I always wondered about the free stroke adjust on Shimano

On the Hopes you can at least see that the lever moves

  • I find you have to bleed the brakes with the freestroke screw at mid point to get meaningful adjustment.
