  • Have tapered forks just done away with crown races?

    Some have, some haven't.
Presumably your new fork has a flat crown race seat and you don't have a crown race because the old fork didn't use one?

Lol, of course, why would this be easy?

Presumably your new fork has a flat crown race seat
[shrugging emoji] there’s like a flat 3- 5mm around the very base of the steerer but could very well just be there to interface with the head tube. Attempted to photo but it’s tricky to get the detail as it’s all black.

The fork is a full carbon thing so I’m assuming there needs to be something between the carbon and the headset bearing, but that might just be because carbon components are also a new thing in my life.

  • The bearing should sit right on there but you need to make sure that the angle of the bearing seat is the same as that on the fork. It's probably 45 degrees but just double check, otherwise only the edge of the bearing will sit on the carbon and won't spread the load, potentially leading to damage.
Whereas previously the angle on the crown race would match the headset because it came with it. Now you have to match the lower bearing to your frame and fork specifically
