Anyway - I don't want to derail this thread. Tao is a legend, I don't want to detract from that, I love what he is doing. Doing something is better than nothing (BC/UCI). Nobody is perfect and clearly Tao has spent a lot of time thinking of how he can use his platform to effect change.

TGH starting Paris-Nice for the first time.
Edit: That’s a lie, he rode it in 2019 supporting Egan Bernal.

First thought: That's kind of a big deal.
Second thought: Holy shit, HE WON THE FUCKING GIRO! -

Paris-Nice just popping up out of nowhere this year.
Full startlist not even out and some big names, both for the GC and the sprints. Excite.

Five days to go and no team has announced it’s roster yet. You’d think the organisers would work in tandem with the teams to build up some anticipation about the race and the potential rivalries we’ll see. Everyone talks about cycling needing to create a season long narrative, but the sport struggles to do this for individual races still. It makes me despair.

A rare occasion when I read something from the sports pages—this morning in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/mar/02/everything-is-political-tao-geoghegan-hart-exclusive

Came here to post that; he comes across really well.

Good egg.

Good stuff. Guess Zlatan already forgot about his work for the UN a few years ago

“I am and will be continuing to lobby British Cycling to change youth racing rules to reduce the financial ‘arms race’ and costs associated with kids’ racing. Even just small changes can have a huge impact. This is not an easy sport to access. We need to change that. We need those kids getting into cycling, to grow the sport from the bottom up.”
Leaders should really listen to this guy.

Feels like a type specified bike would do wonders for kids cycling. Similar to how the Laser dinghy works for sailing

👍
One design seems like good idea. Cheap enough that schools can have a fleet.
Tao sounds like one of the good ones. -

Ha! My dad was an instructor and I raced these a bit.

Zlatan is I suspect a massive racist.
He is not scared of what people think. But this is very poor mindset.
“This is the first mistake famous people do when they become famous: for me it is better to avoid certain topics and do what you’re good doing, otherwise you risk doing something wrongly.”

He can do one. He's mostly concerned about Zlatan-ism; where someone is biased against HIM not against anyone else. For example, this from 2018:
"What does the Swedish media do? They defend me, or do they jump on and attack me? They still attack me, because they cannot accept that I am Ibrahimovic.
"If another player would do same mistake I do, they would defend him. But when it comes to me, they don't defend me.
"This is about racism. This is about racism. I don't say there is racism, but I say there is undercover racism.
"This exists, I am 100 percent sure, because I am not Andersson or Svensson. If I would be that, trust me, they would defend me even if I would rob a bank. They would defend me, I tell you."

He’s sharing his experience of racism growing up in Sweden as the son of immigrant parents from Bosnia and Croatia. His father was/is Muslim, too.

My point was that he has issues with others talking about racism, but not about him talking about racism (rather than me trying to diminish his experience of it). You'd think that he'd feel some sense of solidarity with the experience of others...

Zlatan is Zlatan.
I wouldn't want to sit and talk about anything with Zlatan beyond "tell me what you really think about Pep".
-
• #871
The answer is in his book, its a good read
-
• #872
Yeah, I know his views. I'd just like to be around him as he tells them.
-
• #873
Lol. Poor Pep.

Some info on Tao's injuries and his return to racing:
He's riding 'all of the Ardennes Classics'.
Wow guys, so defensive. Step back and think a bit. He has some very valid points and yes he is a very angry man, but he has reasons to be the way he is and we should not dismiss his opinion.
