Yeah I think it's no. I used to think that the rear mech was immaterial because the shifter defines the pull, and the RD just does what it's told (right?).
Apparently, rear shift ratio is a thing - that being the amount a RD moves horizontally for each mm of cable pulled. 9sp XT is 1.7, 11sp is a gnat's off 1.1.
In my case (9sp XT RD and a 10sp cassette), I used a friction thumbie.
Would your 9sp RD be able to handle the largest 11sp cog, anyway?

Shimano compatibility chart does not rule it in or out. Does anyone know for sure?
