I've never heard of it before. I think it's just an anti-glare/dust cover.
It's glued to the front bezel, which is made of thin aluminium and is also glued on and can't be removed without bending it such that it'll never be the same again.
You can buy a new bezel for £20.

Lens fell out of my wife’s MacBook Air. Camera works fine, but is this a common problem and is there an easy way of replacing it?
She’s taped some clear plastic over it in the mean time. Not sure if she still had the lens/cover that fell out.
