Apparently new ISO regs for divers watches state that the watch must have lume at all 12 indices. There are lots of divers watches with a date at three instead of an hour marker, eg the Submariner Date, Sea-Dweller etc., that presumably no longer meet the regs.
Seiko take pride in having “Diver’s” on their dive watches, which it seems they wouldn’t be able to do on a new watch without having lume at three. Rolex don’t actually use that designation on their watches so it’s probably more a question of pride / marketing.
Well it would certainly explain why they've done exactly that on the SLA049 and SLA051:

Edit: the article even mentions that as a possible reason. Wonder what Rolex are going to do about their divers watches with dates.
