There's also a well known bodge with a standard crank puller and some kind of tube that overcomes the puller's lack of engagement with the threads. Personally I'd just buy the tool then flog it on eBay for the same money minus fees.

I've removed mine a few times using al aluminium rod that I bought from ebay for £3. This slots into the spindle and presses up against the opposite nut, and then it gives something for a regular crank removal tool to press against.
does anyone know anywhere i can buy the SI hollowgram crank removal tools for less than £25!?!?
i know it's not a massive amount, but i plan on removing my crank and replacing it with a shimano one, so spending £25 for a single use tool seems a touch excessive
