Silly remarks aside, the durability of the modern jet engine is surely one of mankind's greatest achievements?
The BA flight that ended up with volcanic glass glazed onto the turbines and landing safely springs to mind...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_9
Post-flight investigation revealed that City of Edinburgh's problems had been caused by flying through a cloud of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Galunggung. Because the ash cloud was dry, it did not appear on the weather radar, which was designed to detect the moisture in clouds. The cloud sandblasted the windscreen and landing light covers and clogged the engines. As the ash entered the engines, it melted in the combustion chambers and adhered to the inside of the power-plant. As the engine cooled from inactivity, and as the aircraft descended out of the ash cloud, the molten ash solidified and enough of it broke off for air to again flow smoothly through the engine, allowing a successful restart. The engines had enough electrical power to restart because one generator and the on-board batteries were still operating; electrical power was required for ignition of the engines.

fox are you still interested in giving adsb a go? If so, I have a spare nooelec SDR dongle you're welcome to have for a modest forum donation. Not quite as good as the flightradar ones but still one of the better ones.
Sorry @Stonehedge I totally missed this 7 months ago.
I am still interested, especially now this lockdown is going to go on. So. Long.
Is this still a good USB stick to get?
https://thepihut.com/products/flightaware-pro-stick-plus-usb-sdr-ads-b-receiverAnd this aerial?

No worries! I actually only listed that stick on eBay a few days ago. Shame you missed it
Yes, that flight aware Pro plus stick is about as good as you can get without spending loads of money.
That antenna would get you started but is incredibly low quality and will lose you a lot of signals. The coax is made of copper coated aluminium which is very very lossy at UHF and the radiating element is totally the wrong length. Most antennas sold on eBay and Amazon are a sack of shite.
If I were you I'd look up home made Adsb antennas (cantennas etc) and if that doesn't tickle your fancy, spend a little more (£20ish) on something hand made from Broadsword Antennas or something like this:

If neither of those options tickle your fancy let me know and I should be able to make you a simple antenna.

Had two of these fly over really low earlier. Must have been below 150m.

Where's that radio tracker when you need it?

On the topic of ADS-B/Mode S/MLAT receivers, 360Radar can successfully track Mode A only aircraft. This is only on his development server at present but he's hinted it will be going live in the near future.

The view is nice, but bring ear protection; off each shoulder are the loud ends of four 28000lb thrust turbofans, and about a foot above your head are the muzzle ends of two missile tubes.

They've obviously moved it from this location - this satellite image is from 2017 - today the platform is empty. If you search google earth for Kaspiysk Railway Station, it'll take you close enough. South of this location there's a historic site marker on the coast called Ekranoplan Lun - but no sign of the aircraft there.

Now that's a different kettle.

The known movements are documented on the wikipedia, the most recent is likely too recent for google earth to catch up.

Thanks, sorry meant to come back on this but got distracted again.
The Broadsword Antennas look really good, especially for the money. This one for an extra tenner seems betterer?
https://www.facebook.com/commerce/products/3061707783936299/?ref=mini_shop_items_for_you&referral_code=nullI'm thinking I could put it on the roof of our new house. Would that be mad? Could it get struck by lightning or something?
I found this site and have been enjoying watching military movements through it:
https://globe.adsbexchange.com/Are there any advantages to your own ground station other than contributing to the greater good (which I get and I'm up for, although I wonder how useful yet another one in London is when the issue is more coverage elsewhere)?
As ADS-B Exchange don't filter military stuff would they be a good one to share my data with?
Oh also is there a preferred type of connector? Presumably the same as on the Flight Aware USB? For some reason every antenna I look at seems to have a different one and if it's anything like TV aerials having adapters involved will weaken the signal...
@Stonehedge :)

They keep coming over London, on their way to Brum and back IIRC. You can't half hear 'em.
There's a particularly funky Cavok Air navy blue and orange one.

Wauw.
That said, the later Migs and Bureau Sukhoi produce the more elegant solutions imo.

Wish DCS had limits on head movement so you couldn't stick your head through the canopy like that. Opening it after landing and standing on the seat is pretty cool tho'.
My goals are met for the time being...
