  • as a place with lots on show and available to buy - https://www.theotherartfair.com I think they are online now but pretty good in person, when that happens again.

open houses during art festivals, when that happens again...
    instagram etc

I'm sure there are people on here who make art to sell, maybe start a thread asking for the sort of stuff you're interested in to buy or links and contacts etc?

  • Previously it used to be enjoyable to go to open studios or to degree shows and find things there. Obviously if you know the artist you want then there's their own websites or galleries. There's online degree shows too.

A lot of artists are organised around studio groups - Conditions in Croydon, Gasworks in Vauxhall, Cubitt in Islington to name a few. Browse their websites and you'll find something.

Public spaces, away from the larger Tates etc, such as Camden Arts Centre, Chisenhale, Nottingham Contemporary etc are worth looking at too. Not to buy from obviously but somewhere to find things out. For my money European institutions, such as the German (eg Koln, Bonn) and Swiss (eg Bern) Kunsthalles have consistently, and continue to, do more interesing things.

For cheaper things then http://www.alliededitions.org/ would be a good place to start, benefiting the institutions that support artists too.

This past year the online Art Fairs / viewing rooms have been a big thing, and even the Art Basel one advertises prices so can be an easy non intimidating way to find work. The next Basel is in March https://www.artbasel.com/ovr

I really also think it's worth looking at dealer galleries. Find a couple you like and send them an honest email with your budget and you never know what's in the inventories. In London look at Maureen Paley, Carlos/Ishikawa, Emalin, Soft Opening, Arcadia Missa, greengrassi and Cabinet.

Don't buy anything from anywhere that purports to be 'Affordable' or 'Changing the way people buy art'

  • there's a cool old house in Cambridge that an art collector lived in that has been left how it was, all that stuff

Kettle's Yard - I agree, the house is amazing. Loads of things that are absolutely spot-on in there. The fella had some taste.

They have some interesting stuff (small selection of limited edition prints, etc.) in their online shop also.

  • Never purchased but a wide selection of not only art but technical drawings, posters. et cetera are at SSPL prints.
Maybe look at 1000 Museums too?

  • Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll have a look through them all.

There must be so many artists out there creating things, I suppose it's a case of finding a few you like then following the threads of who they interact with or reference. A bit like music I guess, which I'm a bit more grounded in.

  • SSPL prints

Have used (ages ago). Good service from my recollection.

  • Have a look at #artistsupportpledge on instagram. The initial meaning of the tag isn't necessarily that relevant to what you ask – to my understanding it was about artists supporting each other financially during the pandemic. But I've found that the artists using that tag tend to price their works quite reasonably. Be prepared to sift through plenty of works that don't speak to you, but with a bit of patience you'll find there are nuggets of gold there too.
If you see anything you like don't be shy about writing to the artist and ask if they might not have a list of works for sale, or if they'd be up for a commission. (A painting of a sweet fixed gear bike being the obvious choice).

  • Fuck, I just spent 5 minutes after writing the above post looking at the most recent entries under that tag and already I've found plenty to like. For the price of a carbon wheel set you can get yourself the following little art collection:

  • This is a good shout & a good way to lose the last hour of work!

Commissions aren't my thing though - I like looking at or trying to work out other people's creativity, they don't need my boring input.

  • Very cool. Never looked at that channel before.

  • moved to Art Club thread

  • These are great Al get them up in the art club thread. I esp like the top one and the embroidery... How about embroidery of the industrial view 🤔

  • We moved and I missed the moulding picture rails from our last place, so bought the below. It’s very good - low key, simple, the zipper hooks are good and lie nicely against the wall. Took a while to put up double and triple checking I had the 10 screw holes lined up perfectly before drilling.

Recommended for anyone looking for a picture hanging system. I only put the one up but will almost certainly go for another one in our hallway.

  • $69mn for a beeple / .jpeg at christies yesterday
    truly modern art

  • Technically it’s contemporary art.

  • Technically it’s not art. If the interesting part of the work is the medium and value it’s technology not art. Art subsumes technology not the other way around.

  • after reading about it i still haven't a clue about it, did someone just buy a load of photos ?

  • Surely just Tulip Mania with an internet connection, tulip.jpg.

  • Its cryptoart, a bit like bitcoin but with jpegs. I don't quite understand it but it has something to do with owning the rights the image or something? not too sure, saw an article about it a while ago. I think its attempting to make digital art more of a commodity

  • That looks great. Getting the holes all lined up looks challenging though! The rail feels secure just clipped into the screw heads like that?

  • Yeah, feels good and secure - helped by the fact there's so many of them. It's quite hard to click it on, then very difficult to get it off as I had to to trim a little extra off the end.

I put it up on my own. If i had had help i'd have used the rail as a guide to double check the markings were in a straight line.

  • Plus one on the #ArtistSupportPledge I've sold quite a lot of works over the last year, all thanks to the pledge and in turn bought some wonderful pieces as well.

Getting very chummy with my local framers.

Buy art from artists if you can!

  • If people want a few recommendations, I can post insta links to the artists I've been buying
