where would you suggest he start looking?
-
• #19655
He already has a gravel bike! Something modern for actual MTB adventures I'd want 67 maximum

Looks a bit Radical! Dude! for my needs.

• #19657
That's on ignore.

"no-holds-barred shredding"
Yeah, that sounds like me... as I squeal like a little girl launching sick air off a curb.

i disagree, in my experaince around 68/69 is nice for long distance adventuring on multi surface for a hardtail.
I have 67 on my full sus and it's okay but I prefer the sharper steering for non proper mtb.
he won't actually ride any mtb, he's just a soft aussie who wants suspension for his little soft hands

I guess the question is what does the good sir mean by “adventuring”. Back garden adventuring for the simple folk like myself on a bike that you also want to point downhill fast.
Or actual adventuring that you and hippy like to get up to? -

Like, WTF is BOOST and do I need it?
Is 120mm suspension a lot? a little? too much?
"Side Swing front derailleur required for double" WTF is that?
"BOOST cranks must be used for proper 52mm chainline" are my knees going to die?
"Recommended tire size: 27.5x2.4 (2.8 max) or 29x2.25 (2.4 max)" fat enough? I mean that's basically road bike tyre widths :)

It's for going to the shops with my gang, obvs

fair point on that sag reducing ha
if he is doing actual mtb then it would be real nice. -
• #19665
Like, I want it to ride stuff that my gravel bike is trying to kill me on.
With a longer term view to do stuff like some of the "Divide" rides. It needs to work for weekend gnar and off-road ultras. Hence no dual-suss losing me all that triangle space.

Ok, so that's a thing I have no concept of. I mean, I know what happens with suspension but how do I know what's too steep etc? That's why I was just gonna buy a Surly like everyone rides TD with.

What's the budget?

fixed up my felt with some new tyres and a shifting cable. so good to get out on some local routes for first time in years. really enjoyed it! less fussy about having the most modern kit on my mtb. 10sp still works somewhat ok. would be good to get a remote for the fork lockout though ... and get it serviced
will be monitoring this little artefact around my BB though.... hoping (optimistically) that is just a crack in the laquer. if not I will definitely be looking to wet my wick on a new down country setup

For every 2cm of sag the head tube steepens by 1 degree. Cotic geo charts take sag into account.

2.25" is bordering on gravel now. Current trendy wheel/tyre combo is 29"×2.4-2.6".
You will want Boost unless you're trying to save money by buying something old
For a proper trail hardtail 130-140mm forks are about right, maybe you could use less if you're not shredding gnar

The last time I bought a new MTB was in 2000. Not a clue. Assume off the peg frame/bike with whatever more expensive shit is needed to make it either faster or more durable or comfier.
-
• #19674
I can only see 66 head angle.

• #19675
So, 120mm fork? Or bigger? How do I know what the sag will be with no clue about suspension setup?
bit slack imo
I'd want to be around 68 69 deg
