On investigation, I think the issue on the CX bike might be that the little plate which sits on the bottom of the shifter which you can unscrew & remove to access the internals had snapped. As it was no longer held in place properly by the screw, the broken section had drifted forward & up a bit & was perhaps interferring with the mechanism. Fingers crossed that taping that on will solve it, will look into the road bike issue another time (it's not quite as bad on that one).
