  • Miss spinnnout isn't a fan of her current bike and can't get comfortable on it. So I've agreed to build her an on-point gravel grinding machine, or as some might say, a hyrbid (shhhh).

I've been extensively researching the Gravel / Gravé / Gnarmac / Groad thread for a winning combination of the best gear ratios, optimum bar width, tyre sizes and artisanal bar bags but it'll be a mash of whatever parts I can pull from her current bike, the parts bin, the classifieds and new.

I was just going to get an Arkose then this hot pink Croix de fer came up, what's not to like?
Seeing as Genesis now sell a flat bar Croix de Fer, it can't be the worst idea, amiright?!

A few things to learn, don't have the tools for external headsets or adapters for IS mounts. The headset is without bearings so going to get a new (purple) one in.

Plan is to use a 46/34 Quarq chainset with Shimano flat bar road shifters, a 4700 FD and r7000 RD with wolf tooth direct mount to run a 11-40 cassette. Already have a couple of wheelsets for road/gravel tyres.

  • Most bits are starting to arrive and might be able to get it rolling next weekend. Lucked out and have some nice looking m7000 hydraulic mtb brakes coming from the classifieds.

Waiting on a purple Hope headset and press tool before I can really get started.

  • Subbed!

this is going to be real good!

  • Smart looking colour!
Looking forward to see what you make of it.

  • should be a decent build. croix de fer frameset is a solid choice.
any particular reason for such a huge gear range over a 1x setup?

A combination of it being her only bike and already owning that powermeter/chainset. If she gets back into riding, I'll put an 11-34/36 on the road wheelset.

    A hybrid?

  • I am quite fond hybrids, yes..

  • Subbed. But out of curiosity, why road flat bar shifters and r7000 instead of mtb triggers and derailleur?

  • To some degree aren’t hybrids these days just sort of gravel casual?

  • don't let anyone from marketing hear you say that!!!

  • Thought gravel was casual anyway

MTB mates of mine like to call cross causal as well

Two lines of thinking, familiarity with road parts and can re-use a FD. Secondly, can switch to road levers later on and retain the FD/RD as same pull ratios.

Fairly certain that MTB parts would have been the most cost effective and better for second hands parts.

I had a flat bar CdF in 2015 get with the times!

  • Yes but if you put drops on a hybrid bike it does about what a gravel bike would but longer slacker or? I’m not against this as it is what I ride lol

  • Yeah I agree, great bikes can be made!

  • MTB mates of mine like to call cross causal as well

    I'm triggered

Do they race? I must have missed all the casual easy races :(

  • Yeah I think they just like taking the piss out of me tbh. The best one I've had is that an off camber being a feature of a race is laughable, which I can't really argue with tbf. But yeah, they're just wind ups

  • mines also been hybrided at some points and is getting flat bars again too.

  • What kind of handlebars are that on the blue CdF? Really liking the shape.

  • looks great in orange and seems she'll need a front rack to keep with it judging by yours and @Josh builds.

  • Parts have been arriving and a few have come off the donor bike.

    1. Shimano SL-RS700 shifters are surprisingly nice but they were a little pricey.
    2. Found a XT cassette for SLX money.
    3. LFGSS sourced SLX brakeset also real nice.

Can't do much building yet- front mech needs a shim and no headset either.

Fitted an arguably pointless upgrade to the R7000 RD, got trigger happy, as apparently it can handle 11-40t whatever Shimano say.

  • The Pelago Commuter rack would be ideal for this build

  • No need for Wolftooth - there's comments to that effect all over this forum.

Those brakes would go well on the Inbred so if you do move to a road group...
