  • I don't watch videos, I just like & subscribe

Really though, as someone who's current idea of training is riding up some virtual hills a couple of times a week until I get a bit out of breath, any kind of plan sounds horrific

  • Trainerroad is a bit cult like especially when you read the forums.

  • I believe this is the study for those interested. I’ve not actually read the paper but table 2 gives the training durations of the different plans (6-7hrs/week)

    https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/japplphysiol.00652.2012?rfr_dat=cr_pub++0pubmed&url_ver=Z39.88-2003&rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org

That said, the effectiveness of a polarised approach for low volume training is something I think needs more exploration. Personally @10hrs/week I try to adopt a polarised approach with 2 intensity sessions during the week (~90tss with work at FTP or above) with longer (2+hr runs, 3-4hr bike) zone 1 sessions on the weekend.

Soon I’m going to have to cut my overall volume so I’ll probably loose some of the longer weekend sessions and add in another high intensity day.

  • Person charging 400$ every month posts video poking at platform charging <$20 usd. meh.
Does TR make the majority of people faster, probably. Could you optimise plans to you as an individual, probably, you'll have to do it yourself or cough up a little more ££.

  • Yes have the flat white Platin plan.

  • Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but when creating a Garmin workout in Garmin Connect, is there a way of selecting the power interval duration? It defaults to 3-sec, but I was a 10-sec avg - It appears the only way to edit this by is manually editing every step on the Garmin itself with is a big pain in the ass.

is there 3rd party software I can use?

Congratulations! 3 kids here and currently managing to fit in 5-6hrs per week...

  • I think they main issue is that if you just go by the program they give you, you can burn out easily and a lot of people do.

Who is a lot of people? I still suspect it makes the majority of users quicker.
I'm very much in the 'use TR but educative yourself' camp. If you want tailoring, get a coach or try xert or something.

I say this as someone who has dug a few training holes and stopped my recent plan after 3 weeks - too much intensity. That was my fault though.

  • Previously raced road, track and TT but now fat after time off the bike due to fractured collarbone from being wacked by a car, and then more recently a Cholecystectomy. Also sitting on my arse working from home and increased wine intake during lockdown hasn't helped (at least for my weight).

No specific plans at the moment, other than loosing weight. Any intervals that are better for fat burning than just riding my bike? Limited to max 2h30m for a ride, as my collarbone starts complaining after that.

  • Have a look at the forums and you can see the repetitive "why and I failing my workout" threads.

If I was just someone that wanted to get fitter and I pay for a plan i want to trust the plan they supply. If it burns me into the ground then I'll be confused as to why.

Then go ibonline and people say "oh you need to educate yourself" . Ohh.. "Then why am paying for a plan if I need to educate myself about the plan to not get burnt out from doing it?"

Also I'm not trying to start an argument here either.

  • Just have fun on your bike and watch what you eat / cut back on the booze?

  • Under recovering is actually way more common than over training for the majority of non pro athletes although both dig you the same hole. Poor diet, not enough sleep and/or too much alcohol will do me far more damage than throwing an extra couple of intense intervals into my plan.

  • Use 'Repeats'.

  • How often do they launch new plans? They throw a lot of weight behind sweetspot base, it’s almost become a meme on the podcast.

Surely there should be a variety of options. Launching options would solve the PR nightmare this is. That video has gone viral within these circles. But I’ve got a feeling they might double down.

I saw people in the YouTube comments calling for Chad’s head.

  • No idea I just used to read the forums as there is some good info if you filter through all the people trying to find the perfect interval length.

I get ads from them on Facebook and the one earlier was about building a base and they recommend sweet spot.

Burning pitch forks and a lynch mob because of a training plan is ridiculous and people like that just want attention.

  • chad must resign !

    (who is chad)

  • He's that band leader guy from Whiplash

  • I still suspect it makes the majority of users quicker.

Dylan says exactly that... most people will get faster if they use TR but (a) they are more likely to dig themselves a hole and (b) they could be getting even faster.

  • need maj to knock up a chad trainerroad Vs the VL dylan meme

  • get faster - don't be a dragger

  • I’d like to know what hambini thinks
