• These scruffy pedals came with my first Gillott,it was a complete bike, I thought they were generic pedals and nothing special.
However I was making the most of my VCC membership yesterday and accidentally came across an advert for Strata pedals.

  • Blimey, that must have put a spring in your step. “Err I liked them even before I knew they were rare and desirable” :)

  • Better photograph.

  • Ha, I paid £90 for mine a few years back.
£500 is outrageous. Clearly some people out there with far too much money.
Is it boomers with too much money?

  • Is it boomers with too much money.
Yes I think so, The Hobbs mudguards also usually sell for prices that are in orbit.

  • Made me look! I think it's also a stretch to say they are "very good".

@7ven just cos they're listed at £500 doesn't mean they'll sell there, sheesh I hope not anyway. [I listed some nice nos stuff recently starting at 99p thinking it was going to go through the roof and it ended up selling for only just about what I thought was a fair price. I've got some stuff at more optimistic fixed prices and it's tough to shift :) ] Happily I also bought some a year or two ago, a bit more than you paid but same ballpark if I remember.

But yes boomers, retirees without hungry mouths to feed, I can't promise not to frustrate middle aged bike fanciers in my later years :D

Edit - those mudguards at a grand must have been an aberration. I've got a theory that it's also a pissing contest for some moneyed collectors - they don't like losing and if two of them take an interest, especially after a few top shelf whiskeys ...

  • The monied collectors’ pissing contests were amazing before eBay had anonymous bidders.
There were certain Japanese collectors who were known not to give up - so they staked their claim early on and probably deterred bidding.

It was fun to watch though.

If the postage wasn’t stupid and the bloody VAT these might be a steal.

  • That’s really clean. Loving the Alatet headset too (I’ve just bought a restored one of those)
I’m guessing that’s a repaint with later transfers, but I don’t know much about later Gillotts, typography seems v mod.

  • Bloody VAT - it's making looking at French ebay a pretty bitter experience!

Re the Magistroni, £150 all-in for nos cranks and chainwheel (a bit on the big side), it's not cheap but it's not awful if that floats your boat.

I saw these the other day and thought of you. I don't know what they are, and I don't have 300 euros for them but I surely do like them https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254837898741?ul_noapp=true

  • Yep, description says it was an earlier refinishing - very nice though. I think that's one of Mark Steven's https://www.flickr.com/photos/makfreak/albums/72157713742709096 - I've been oggling his collection a lot recently. I really like the seattube banding on that; the similar French tricolour are great too. Still mentally arm wrestling myself to try and keep my 1960 Gillott refinish under control!

  • That full build is incredible. Mark must have an amazing collection.

  • If you're in the mood to be sick on yourself have a look at this one https://www.flickr.com/photos/makfreak/sets/72157638044964926/ make sure to read the details.

  • Every bit I noticed made me dry heave it's so lovely, and I don't tend to enjoy yellow bikes.

  • Yes absolutely lovely this bike, one of my favourite Gillott's. Read the descriptions as it's all in the detail
I remember this on eBay, it was local to me.too but for some reason I decided not.to go for.it.as it was an inch to small.
I agree with @7ven I don't think those Lytaloy pedals will sell for that price
They don't look in the best condition and who knows what the bearing surfaces are like. The description is half hearted with only a few photos, £500, it's a big ask.

  • What did it sell for?
    It is in amazing condition.
Same pedals and brakes I’m going to put on my Connoisseur.

  • Sorry can't remember. I think the auction was ended early so he may have offered the buyer a good price.
looking forward to seeing the Connoisseur build completed.
