Possible move to Bristol

Posted on
  • New job means I will be visiting Bristol a fair bit (when restrictions finally ease). Tempted to see if I might want to move to the city or somewhere within cycling/commuting distance. Does anyone have any suggestions for places to ride, visit etc in Bristol to make the most out of my time in a few days? I'll get the chance do some exploring of cycle routes, get a feel for areas I might want to live (i..e non-car dominated).

  • I'd recommend the following to give you feels for rides in each compass direction:

    1) Take the Bristol to Bath bike path out through the two tunnels then loop back through Radstock > Chew Valley
    2) North out into the relative flat lanes around Yate and Wootton under Edge, back down the Severn through Hill / Rockhampton
    3) Mendip loop going up Burrington Coomb and Cheddar Gorge
    4) Over the bridge into Wales for some Forest of Dean gravel

Happy to share detailed routes if any of that is of interest.

  • @tomasito please can you stick details in here?

On a separate note, every road ride I do at the moment comes back through Ashton Court and it is not ideal dodging prams/dogs/kids (not being a scrooge, and I ride it considerately, but it is a pain)

  • Have you heard of the festival way

  • Come out on deliveries with me, get a feel
    For how hilly it is.

  • @MicroDosed™ nope. Is that the answer? Will buy u beer if so.
Not been here that long so just picking routes out of here http://www.uobcc.com/routes.html

The Portishead Clevedon route is especially nice IMO

  • I only ever ride through Bristol, but also have a look at the GWR Audax site, they have the best routes heading out of town

  • The strawberry line is a nice place to cycle and forage at the right time of year

  • Have you tried the new(ish) graded path that cuts across the bottom near the uni building? Avoids most of the crowds

  • Heh, Summer Hill in Knowle was definitely get off and push. What’s the steepest?

  • Will check the above suggestions cheers. Fancy a forum Bristol ride when restrictions allow it?

  • @nejib which uni building? I have not!

  • The UWE Bower Ashton building. The path doesn't show up on google maps but cuts along here

  • @nejib ah great thanks so this black line is the route from the long ashton crossroads to the bridge? The bit I have circled is the main pain

  • Vale st for sure. Plenty that hit 18-20% around town. All quite short though

  • Yeah that bit can be shit, I really hate the speed bumps too. If you wanted to be really picky, join the 'new' path at the entrance to the Church Lodge car park, at the 2 in the right hand B3128 (sorry for thread hijack)

  • @nejib cheers. The roadie I was with didn't fancy the e on estate to the crossroad bit of the path so we ended up back on the shit way up haha

  • Summer Hill in Knowle

    Anyone living in/around Knowle?
    I'm potentially moving there.
