  • Thought I'd stick this here as who knows how many other fixie skidders are also into classic cars?

Very regrettably listing my Mk2 Golf for sale, I’ve owned it since 2018 after buying it from a local collector. It’s a 5dr 1600cc ‘Driver’ model, in Metallic Royal Blue with factory sunroof (fully watertight!) and factory towbar with Hella electrics. At the time of purchasing it was the best un-modified, usable example I could find - and I have put a lot of time, effort and money into keeping it as such.

It has been my ‘daily driver’, which has meant nice consistent usage of between 4,000 and 8,000 miles a year and has been meticulously serviced and maintained during my ownership. All work has been done by A&M Restorations in Plympton with all receipts and paperwork kept alongside an extensive history file going right back to the original bill of sale. I’ve had every advisory noted during servicing and MOTing attended to, and have had worn parts replaced to an OEM+ level, making it an ideal usable classic. This has included an upgrade to a Weber 32/34 carburettor from the stock Pierberg, and a full set of Bilstein shock absorbers all around (on standard springs to the ride height is unaffected). Over £2,000 has been spent on regular servicing and enhancements at the last count.

While most of my journeys have been local (usually 15miles of A Road each way to and from work) I have taken it on some longer journeys including return trips from Devon to London without a hiccup. I’m selling it as I’m no longer commuting (as I’m sure is the same story with many people) so it’s just stored in the garage. I’m driving it once a week to keep everything running smoothly but I can’t see me going back to the office regularly enough to justify having a second car.

Mechanically the car is perfect, and the upgraded carb has been a very worthwhile investment, giving a smooth idle and throttle response, with a manual choke which makes the starting procedure much more predictable than the original auto-choke system. There are no leaks at all and while it is a fairly high mileage example, those miles have been accrued consistently throughout its lifetime. It’s currently on 197,000 miles and this will likely increase as it’s used regularly. It has an MOT until June.

The bodywork is excellent all around. There are a couple of marks and dents around the car but considering the age and mileage these are few and far between. There is a small patch of rust coming through on the rear passenger side door, which I was quoted £500 to cut out, weld and respray. Other than that there is no other rust on the bodywork.

The interior is in good condition with no visible wear to the seats. The headlining has come away and is currently held in with pins, this was done before my ownership and has never caused me any problems. The headlining is a notoriously difficult item to replace so I have left it as is - preserving the originality of the car as no OEM replacement is available.

I’m asking £3,500. Unmodified examples like this are appreciating rapidly so I have no doubt this will be worth a lot more in the coming years.

  • No power steering I see.

  • Can't work out what gave it away (clearly it wasn't my massive biceps...), but you're right - no power steering here.

  • no launch control or flappy paddle shifters either...

I would love something like this. Nice to see one unmodified, much more appealing to me than all the modded ones out there. I think the lack of power steering here would actually make it more appealing to some buyers.

    lovely car - glws!

  • No iPad in the middle of the centre console, no 'limp home' mode, no trips to the garage to get a fault code, no working out what that warning light means on the dash...

Thanks @TotalShanner - it's one of those where I won't be sorry at all if it doesn't sell, it's genuinely the best car I've ever owned, but I have a nagging feeling it's not going to get used very much and I don't want to have to think about having to use it.

  • I do like my classic cars .it was the steering wheel that gave it away .I recently worked on a mk2 16v much better than the new stuff from VW. Here are a few cars we have done.

  • What an absolute beauty!

  • Really lovely man! Got a mk1 gti cabriolet and can vouch for these being very very fun cars. Glws

  • Lovely. Hard to believe it's done that mileage but sounds like it's been cosseted.

I suspect your regular use is keeping it in better condition than worrying about using it...

  • Thanks all - really appreciate it. @billygoat28 that Mk3 Escort is luverly!
@Fox, my thoughts exactly. That seems to be the trick with classic cars, keeps everything running sweet.

  • Mk3 Escort currently running 2.0 and R1 throttle bodies .

  • nice car GLWS. Used to be a blue auto mk2 driver on the road next to mine when I was like 16-18. I do wonder what happened to it.

EDIT - it is SORN. Found a pic of it from 2014

  • oooft - love the mk3 escort
At home my mum has loads and loads of family photo albums with a lot of shots from the late seventies and early eighties.

Theres loads of photos of my mum with her car a few years before I was born, it was a mk3 escort in the same blue. If only she'd kept it.

  • Lovely! GLWS

  • No iPad in the middle of the centre console, no 'limp home' mode, no trips to the garage to get a fault code, no working out what that warning light means on the dash...

    actual lol'd

I now drive a car made by the other well known german manufacturer. Nothing lifts the spirits quite like your car suddenly saying DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION MAXIMUM OUTPUT NOT AVAILABLE
Then having to drive home unable to get over 15mph knowing theres a minimum 4k repair bill coming

Would really love to get rid of the car and get an old Volvo 740 estate :)

  • One for @MrBaklava

  • Good choice!
I had an old V70 before the Golf. A good sized tree fell onto the front of it in the night and it reversed out from underneath with barely a scratch. Bloody indestructable thing.

  • Ooooof that nice. Makes me miss my old ones

  • I mean, who doesn't regret selling an old vw?

  • Was still around up to Jan 2020

  • Don't do this to me...
I feel obliged to sell, don't really want to, will definitely regret it!

  • Mine was a H reg! Loved the 6 digit number plate. Only a 1.3, but very late 1992/3? Was finished with gti spec red lined bumpers and 4 light grill as standard. Had a 4 speed box, used to drive me crazy on the motorway as revs would be through the roof. No power steering, no ABS, only a drivers airbag. Probably best car I’ve owned and regret selling it most days. Bought from an old gent in Eastbourne, had 70K on the clock when I got it.

  • Fair. I regret writing one off on the M5 that’s for sure......

  • Lovely, Tornado Red if I'm not mistaken? 4 light grills are a must for me in the context of MK2s.

  • I've still got my 8v Gti tucked up in Scotland :)

Was just about to chirp in. Great looking car, good luck with the sale!
