  • @Crispin_Glover the Mk2 Escort is amazing, as I had one (not a top spec one like that) as my first car I'll always have a soft spot for them. Eventually sold it for £50 to some farmers who banger raced it to death. sob . My old man used to know Jan Churchill who ran the rally school in Wales whose stock tool of choice for decades has been Mk2 Escorts. Churchill himself used to rally Porsche 911's back in the day too. CSB.

And as we on the subject of drool-worthy rally spec cars, I did a proper 'holy fuck!' when I saw this today, surrounded by modern euro-wagons it was a beacon of awesomeness for miles around.

And @johnnettles2 I wondered how you were getting on with yours when I passed this stunner today.

And I know he's more into 500's but for @jonny a cool old 127 with Arbarth wheels, even looks cool in a colour scheme best described as 'it fell out the back of a cow'.

  • Great car. If I was to buy an SUV it probably would be a diesel Touareg. One of the last visits back to the UK my dad had one as his daily and I drove it back from the airport. Really well screwed together, comfortable and loads of space.

  • I don't even have to defend that one. SD1s are absolutely fantastic to drive.

(And even that 40 year old Lucas switchgear that doesn't always work feels better quality than the 986-era Porsche stuff by far. Porsche really dropped a bollock there.)

The Boxster, just too efficient and German. They had made it too capable and competent to be fun. I expect it would be a good track car, and Porsche have a 1 make race series for the 986 which might be good fun, but as a road car, well: don't buy a 3.2 and don't have the sports suspension. Then it might be fun on the road.

  • I remember seeing a pristine red Renault 5 Turbo II in France when I was a kid.

I wasn’t sure if it was a custom job with the engine in the rear. Such a bonkers car. Bet they’re a hoot to drive.

  • I was planning on buying a 3.0 V6 TDI Toureg but I didn't because:

If they have air suspension its expensive to repair.
    They eat tyres
They eat front brake pads and discs
Running costs are fairly high in terms of "normal" servicing
They need a replacement propshaft and/or prop shaft bearing every 80-100k. If you test drive one and the centre console arm rest is vibrating it's either gone or on the way out.
Watch out for "corrosion on fuel tank straps" in the MOT history - means it's probably pretty grotty underneath.

I would get one from post 2008> as they have the better 240bhp TDI and 30 quid less road tax

  • I thought of you as an SD1 passed me on the M4 last week. I was doing in the region of the speed limit and and the driver was clearly giving it maximum beans. It was making a rather odd noise and I could swear that it was only firing on 6 of the 8 cylinders and there was a fair amount of smoke coming out of the back.

Naturally, it was finished in Jewish racing gold...

  • DS is looking great as always! Are you a member of the Citroen Car Club?

  • Cheers- yes I was 25 years ago and joined again last year. I might do a rally or two when things open up again..

  • @johnnettles2 sounds like a nice way to spend the day.

  • Half renault 5 and half alpina. There for must be amazing.

  • Woolies leather kit is amazing, makes dry cracked and dirty leather come up really well. https://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/product/1034/jensen-leather-renovation-kit Tried the neets foot oil and leather soaps but woolies kit beat them all.

Did you watch the french TV show I mentioned in the summer doing the DS up? Showed the spheres being rebuilt. Did you get the hydraulic system flushed? Or had it been done in the past? Remeber flushing every citroen system and the orange fluid coming out alot darker than before and the filter screens being quite blocked. Don't think I had any citroen that had had its hydraulic system flushed before I did it.

  • The cats are going overseas, sure there's a few dodge scrap dealers in UK, but its much harder policed than ever before.
These guys are brazen and give zero fucks, heard of a few going up here in Glasgow, often the less than 10 year old hybrids are the targets, much higher quality metals in the cat and often not worn out so worth hundreds each or more.

  • Ffs. Depressing.

  • Might have found a great deal on a (relatively) low mileage Boston Green E36 323 sport - Come at me ULEZ!

Will notify here tomorrow if my Clio 182 is for sale.

  • Does the UK have the facilities to recycle ferrous and non ferrous metals.

  • Brake pads question.

My MOT is coming up, so I was wondering about getting new brake pads at the same time as I don't think they've been replaced in the nearly 2.5yrs we've had it.

    1. Is there an easy way to check the pads without taking the wheel off?
    2. Any pad recommendations for a family Golf, typically carrying 2¾ worth of people and a load of shit in the boot. (ones that are easily available in the UK)

    Cheers.

  • Very nice I can Highly recommend The Furniture clinic for leather repair stuff and also the leather repair company. Also for specific vehicle colours you can Google dye suppliers to match them accurately.
I know scratch doctor do a good BMW selection.

  • Minimum thickness for MOT is 1.5mm of pad material, can you see through the wheel how much pad material is left? most brake pad warning lights come on at 3mm wear if fitted.

  • I would like a V12 8 series BMW.

  • In blue, I think.

  • When you come to change the spark plugs and get to the passenger side bank and think bloody hell that was tight getting that one out, then count them up and realise you only have eleven out and you have to go back in deeper :D
We used to spray silicone spray on our forearms so that when we pulled our arms out with that last #12 plug it didn't pull the hairs out of our forearm :D
