I thought burner referenced the disposability of the newspaper as this square gilet thingy serves the same function, and newspaper is also used as starter for fires

Yes, definitely, the convenient aspect of it was definitely part of it - as @Chalfie says :) Around that time I tried giving up a smartphone, and using a Burner phone for a while (gah, wish I could have stuck with it, but not having podcasts & music when out didn't work for me).

You should have used the burner phone to sell drugs and get rich instead of chasing your dreams trying to make money in the highly lucrative cycling industry ;)
