  • New laptop just arrived this morning. Refurb 16" 2019 macbook pro with 512gb SSD and 16gb ram.
Haven't done anything apart from download a couple of apps and get chrome up and running. Apart from a couple of marks on the charger plug and the box being a bit dented at the edges, all good.
Has a 1yr warranty with it as well so a bit of piece of mind.
Really hoping the new m1 16" that is coming doesn't make me feel like I should have waited.
Came with big sur so will have to see how that works with premiere when I get that up and running.
Thanks for helping me figure out what I needed to get.

Now to buy a shitload of usb-c adaptors and hubs..

  • Glad you swung a 16”, they’re great machines.

  • This. GJ CB. It'll last yonks. 'there's always something newer etc'.

  • just had a look at the battery and the cycle count is only 20. So feeling good about that.
    Speakers are good as well.

  • Operation time here. After 10 years it's time for a new battery.

  • Hope you've got some compressed air!

  • I've got a mid 2013 mac book air, owned from new.

The screen hinge has broken after my 2 year old son sat on it... It now flops open to near 180 degrees rather than coming to the hard stop it had before.

I've looked at ifixit teardowns and the hinge replacement looks very involved.
Has anyone else had the hinge go like this and found any other solution other than spending 2 hours taking it apart?

Battery charge cycle is over 1600, I was going to replace the battery as other than the hinge it still functions perfectly. Would be a shame to ditch it now.

Any clever ideas for a fix?

  • If you're not bothered about aesthetics, what about fixing some kind of hinge/bracket to the exterior? Fiber tape?

  • Yes! This was my first thought when I realised how involved taking it apart was.
I'd thought I could fix something onto the body that physically stops the screen opening past a certain point.
But not quite sure on the best way to achieve this. Some double sided sticky tape and some sort of rigid piece to limit the movement maybe?!
Have googled a bit in the hope to find someone else doing the same but haven't found anything yet.

Dont care about its appearance, this macbook never leaves home. If I could bodge it and get even another couple years out it I'd be happy.

Edit - just realised that if I used some fibre tape and attached it in a certain way, that alone could maybe solve it. Will give it a test run with some parcel tape just now

  • Any clever ideas for a fix?

Also return the two year old.

  • Honestly, I'm just sick of him now.

  • Doh - tried some parcel tape and realised it obviously does the opposite of what I want, it limits the screen closing completely.
Would have to tape the keyboard side...

  • Could you 3d print some stops that the back button of the case butt against and support the back of the screen?

  • Having said that though, with a Stanley blade and some proper fiber tape I could maybe do something a little neater than this...
    🙄

  • Yeah if I could attach something here at the back of the hinge to physically limit it.

Maybe even a small bit of plastic superglued on here could work

  • Possible success found here with a decathlon sticky backed bike light mount.

Junior hacksaw and a file should produce something reasonable...

  • It's not pretty but it's better than spending money :)

  • Compressor with the football adapter did the trick.

  • I'm guessing you got chunks out of that? MacBook Air? I replace the battery on my 2013 model a couple of years ago and the inside was stuffed of fluff!

  • yeah, a fair old bit considering the amount of free space, plenty came off the fan too once it spooled up.

  • I still have a strange recurring bug in Big Sur (11.2 beta 2 - but has occurred from .0) which seems to happen at random intervals of time.

The left hand side of the menu bar stops functioning. The apple logo menu and any app menu that's present is non-functioning. All the menu bar items on the right hand side (clock, wifi etc etc) work absolutely fine. When this occurs, the mission control view also stops functioning - making app switching a PITA.

It's resolved super easily by heading to the login window and logging back in again (don't actually need to log out, just to the window).

Can't for the life of me work out what the trigger is.

  • What iPhone replacement for my dad's aging iPhone 6? More space and better battery is what's needed. A better camera as well would be nice.

Also is it worth him going to the Apple store and asking them about replacing the battery, or reconditioning it?

My thinking was they might swap it, or sell him a refurb. The risk is he is upsold a 11 Pro Max because it's got more storage.

    Cheers.

  • Tried to use one of my digital cameras (Fuji X-series) as a webcam, but the Fuji software is only "up-to" Catalina and I'm on Big Sur, and it does not work. Any one know of a different software package that could see the camera connected via USB?

Think the relevant question is how much he wants to spend.
