  • How you should burn 10k

I'd start with a Ti BMX from Mike Laird

  • .

  • What does Mr £10k ride at the moment?

  • constructing a big gulag / guillotine labelled "10k bike inside"

  • Fucking hell. I’d forgotten about Pengy. Iconic.

  • Come to think of it there is a Festka dealer near Aalst, TS-bikes. Also has Cervelo and Parlee according to their website.

Edit: also Baum, you just need to convince him Ti trupms carbon when you turn up to the next group ride. :)

  • I've spent a good minute properly laughing at that. It's fucking wonderful.

  • My 10k's worth: Custom Parlee for carbon, Ricky Feather for steel.

  • Has nobody suggested buying 1/4 of a kitchen yet?

or just 4, possibly 5 mink coats?

  • I actually needs some new shoes, is that in the budget :/

  • Bianchi oltre xr4 or whatever the c.2016/17 equivalent is. Rim brakes with fugly FSA crankset.

  • Just had a look and I like what I see. I fear it will be too sophisticated for him though (I know, that sounds really snobbish). To be honest, I've slightly lost interest in what he ends up doing but I'll keep everyone updated.

  • I'm going to donate the 10k towards Lynchman's medical bills

  • Can’t be helped! Some great stuff has been posted - I want a Ricky Feather bike now 🤑

  • As has been pointed out, you can't really go wrong with a £10k bike from one of the big manufacturers. But it's a choice that is jejune to say the least.

So, along the lines of 'How you should burn 10k' (and because the snow outside is disintegrating fast into slush), I'll have a go....

    • if unsure of exact size you need, get a bike fit (let's call that up to £500, if not needed it slides nicely into contingency)
    • go to swanky bike shop and hire a few bikes you like the look of (£500)
    • start looking for something secondhand, you know your size, don't rush, you've got £3k, let it come to you
    • get a new cycling wardrobe; could involve joining RCC if you fancy travelling without your new bike and hiring one from them (£1,500)
    • plan some cycling trips; I'll go with Tuscany, Vietnam/Thailand/Cambodia and South Africa (£4,500)

Or as we started, get a top end Trek and be done with it

  • This is a far lovelier proposition than a £10k Madone or whatever he ends up with...

  • FWIW the nicest custom carbon bikes I have seen were when I was living in Hong Kong and some of the finance lads got Legend to knock them a frame together.

The craftsmanship and the finish of the carbon certainly looked nice anyway. Assume you could finish one with Schmolke or AX Lightness bits within his budget.

  • Saw a Legend up close, so simple, no fancy tube shapes just a classic bike. And the plain finish in midnight blue was so deep and lush.

  • Why don't you tell your mate to buy a watch instead - many more pointless aesthetic options for people who treat bikes like jewellery anyway.

  • Burning £10k is amateur, may as well go big or go home https://vimeo.com/21103501

  • (Obvious apologies for heading off on a tangent)

  • Can you confirm that this isn't your pal?

  • Haha, big up the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu! Chance would have it that I was listening to Chill Out this morning. Maybe this was playing on my subconscious when I titled the post.

  • Pwahaha, give him a few years and he might be in a similar predicament.
