  • The locknut on my indicator chain came off which has led to my brompton effectively being single speed for quite a while. I've finally got round to finding a suitable nut so need to sort this out.

I've not done anything with Sturmey Archer gears before, how do you work out how much to screw it in by?

Put the chain all the way into the hub, then back off 1/2 a turn, connect to the cable.

Take up the tension, in 2nd gear, the smooth section of the hub needs to be 0.5mm out of the axle.

  • Cheers, will give that a try.

  • Looking for some advice - my s2l isn't shifting properly, won't go down to the smaller cog. I've replaced the cable, seems that's not the issue. The cable is moving at the connector end but the derailleur isn't turning, so I'm wondering if the spring could be the issue - any tips?

  • Something I've always wondered about - why the 1/2-turn loosening of the indicator chain before adjustment? I'm sure I've forgotten this in the past, and it seems to work fine.

  • If it’s not backed off 1/2 and it’s moving, makes it more likely to snap off!

  • Take a photo and a video of the Anchorage ( chainstay area)

  • Not sure how this will help, but here you are

  • Try taking of the DR pusher and giving it all a good clean and apply liberal amounts of grease when refitting it. Back off the limit screws on the pusher too (tbh I’ve always found these to be pointless anyway).
The gear cable going in to the anchorage can have no tension on it when you tighten up the grub screw and it will most likely still shift up fine.

If you undo the gear cable does the chain shift down or does it stay stuck in the bigger cog?

  • If it’s current shifter, probably the shifter playing up. Try bending the lever down towards the floor (they are surprisingly hardy so don’t worry about it snapping off), as if you’re trying to rip it off, often sorts it. Otherwise it’s to your local friendly Brompton dealer for a shifter warranty.

  • I was going to do that...you win the internet today.

  • That sounds like a good reason! Will make sure I double-check...

  • Thanks all. Gave up for the day, will have another look tomorrow. @B0N0R think it could be the pusher, seems like that bit isn't moving freely but it will shift when I turn that bit manually.

  • Can you buy just the gear shifter or are they only sold with the brake lever? Feels wasteful throwing out a perfectly good brake lever.

  • yeah, give me an email to ryan@sjscycles.com and remind me to sort out some stock of them...
